Brief history:

The University's origins can be traced to the early part of the 20th century with the foundation of the former Bournemouth Municipal College. Its modern history began in the early 1970s with the creation of the Bournemouth College of Technology. Construction of the new buildings on what was the largest farm in Talbot Village was completed by September of 1976.

During this time, the Dorset Education Committee reviewed the provision of further and higher education throughout the county. As a result, the College was renamed the Dorset Institute of Higher Education.
In 1990, the Dorset Institute successfully met all of the requirements of the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council and was re-designated Bournemouth Polytechnic. Under the Higher & Further Education Act of 1992, the Polytechnic became Bournemouth University with inauguration on November 27th of the same year.

University Life

Campus location and structure:

Bournemouth University has two campuses called Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus.

Talbot Campus is located in Poole, on the boundary with Bournemouth. It is where the main University buildings are located, including the Library, lecture theatres and 2 low bars.

Lansdowne Campus is just outside Bournemouth's town centre, with the University buildings spread out along Christchurch Road. Unlike Talbot, Lansdowne is not a self-contained campus. The SU run Old Fire Station nightclub is located nearby.

Locations
- The Student Village is situated on the Talbot campus but far away from the city centre and anything else for that matter. Living on the Landsdowne campus in Hurn House and Cranborne House means being close to the city and nightlife but some 2 miles from lectures. The University provides a subsidised bus service. There are also new residences in Poole, for the quieter life.

Rail:

- The nearest station to the University is Bournemouth. The journey by fast train from London takes approximately an 1 hour, 30 minutes. There are also regular trains from the UK's other major cities.

Buildings on the Lansdowne Campus are a five-minute walk from the railway station.

Coach:

- Frequent coach services run to Bournemouth from many large cities. Journey by coach from London takes approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes. The coach station is situated next to the railway station

Road:

Getting to Lansdowne Campus

- To reach Lansdowne Campus from the North or the East, leave the A338 at the junction marked Travel Interchange onto St Paul's Road, then take St Swithuns Road. At the roundabout at the end of St Swithuns Road take the right-hand exit which will bring you onto Christchurch Road (B3066) where the buildings that comprise the campus are located.

- From the West follow the directions to Talbot Campus but proceed past the University on the A3049 (this becomes Talbot Avenue). Next take the Wimborne Road (A347), then the Lansdowne Road (B3064) to continue onto Christchurch Road (B3066).

- There is no student parking at the Lansdowne Campus, although the area is well served by public (pay and display) car parks within easy walking distance of all University buildings.

Getting to the Talbot Campus

- Talbot Campus can be reached from the North or the East via the A338 (locally known as the Wessex Way). Take the exit at the Richmond Hill Roundabout (next to the Zurich Insurance tower) and then follow the signs for the University.

- From the West on the A35 follow the signs to Bournemouth (A3049), taking the dual-carriageway (Dorset Way) past Tower Park. Talbot Campus is located on the A3049 (Wallisdown Road).

- Parking on the Talbot Campus is limited and the car park is pay and display

Buses:

- From Bournemouth rail station you can take the 6a, 6b or 6c Yellow Buses straight to Talbot Campus.
