Brief history:

UCE Birmingham was established by statute in March 1992 but can trace its origins back to the 1800s.

In 1843, a Polytechnic Institute was founded in Birmingham as a result of the collapse of the Mechanics' Institute. It was supported by leading members of the Liberal elite who dominated the city, including George Dawson. Dawson, after whom one of the buildings on our Perry Barr campus is named, was a powerful non-conformist preacher and the main inspiration behind the 'Civic Gospel' which transformed Birmingham in the 1870s.

Visiting

Travel into the city/town of:

The Metro service from Wolverhampton arrives at Birmingham Snow Hill every 10 minutes. Journey time from Wolverhampton is approximately 35 minutes.

Rail:

Trains to Perry Barr Station (approximately every 30 minutes) leave from New Street Station where there is a regular train service to and from all parts of the country. Trains run every half hour from London Euston – the approximate journey time is 100 minutes.

Birmingham is served by two main line stations - Birmingham New Street in the city centre and Birmingham International for the airport and NEC. also in the city centre there are Snow Hill and Moor Street train stations.

Walking Route from New Street Station - 10 mins
- Leave the station via the escalators and you will emerge into the Pallasades shopping mall. Turn left for the exit and proceed down the ramp. Turn right into New Street. The Rotunda building will be on your right. Turn left into High Street. Proceed along here past the Pavilions shopping centre and Marks & Spencer to the first set of traffic lights and turn right. Continue down Albert Street into Curzon Street until you reach Curzon Street Station on your right.

Road:

Perry Barr Campus
From M6 South or North-West
- Leave the M6 at Junction 7 and follow the A34 ( Walsall Road) towards Perry Barr (Birmingham City Centre). After about 2 ½ miles when the Greyhound Stadium is on your left, filter left in the outer of the 2 inside filter lanes. When you arrive at Aldridge Road (A453), take a left ready to take the first right into Wellhead Lane. The first right turn along Wellhead Lane is the entrance to the student car park while all other car parks are accessed by means of Franchise Street which is further down on your right.

From M5 South-West
- Leave the M5 at Junction 1 and travel towards Birmingham City Centre along the A41 for about ½ mile before forking left along the A4040 (Outer Ring Road) towards Perry Barr. After about 2 ½ miles you will arrive at the main Perry Barr traffic island. Go straight over this island and then take the first left into Wellhead Lane. UCE Birmingham campus is now on you left and the staff car parks are at the end of Franchise Street which is the first turning on your left. To access the student car park, travel further along Wellhead Lane and the entrance is on your left.

From M40 Oxford and South
- Arrive on the M42 and travel west towards the M5. Travel north on the M5 leaving at Junction 1. Follow directions “From M5 South-West”.

From M42 East Midlands
- Join the M6 heading towards Birmingham Central and leave the M6 at Junction 7. Follow directions from M6 South or North-West.

TIC
From M6, Jct 6 (Aston Expressway) 3 miles
- Follow signs to City Centre, on the A38(M). After the first exit follow signs for Ring Road and Convention Centre. You immediately come to Dartmouth Circus roundabout. Take the first exit (Dartmouth Middleway, A4540). At the next island take the second exit (Lawley Middleway). At the following island, take the third exit into Curzon Street. Proceed until you reach Curzon Street Station on your left.

From M5, Jct 3 (Hagley Road) 9 miles
- Follow A456 into Birmingham for approximately 6 miles, through the tunnel at Five Ways, onto Broad Street. Follow signs for A38 (Aston Express Way) onto Great Charles Queensway. Proceed under the tunnel at St Chads Queensway. Indicate left as you exit and go down to the island at the bottom. Take the 3rd exit onto James Watt Queensway. Take the second exit (Chapel St) and follow the road round onto Bartholomew Street. Take a left at the next junction onto Albert Street, which becomes Curzon Street. Proceed and you will come to Curzon Street Station, on your right.

From M42, Jct 6 (Coventry Road) 11 miles
- Follow A45 City Centre for approximately 7 miles. You will then reach a large traffic island (Bordesley Circus). Follow signs for M6 into Watery Lane Middleway. Continue to follow signs for the M6 through the first traffic island. At the next island, take the first exit into Curzon Street. Proceed along Curzon Street until you reach Curzon Street Station on your left.

Buses:

Take the 51 or 52 bus from Carrs Lane in the city centre and get off at the One Stop Shopping Centre in Perry Barr. From there, use the pedestrian crossing to reach the campus. Alternatively, get the 33 or 34 bus from Dale End and get off either at the One Stop Shopping Centre or on Aldridge Road.
