Brief history:

The University of Chester was founded as Chester Diocesan Training College by a group of leading figures in the Church of England (including future Prime Ministers William Gladstone and Lord Derby) in 1839 as the UK's first purpose-built teacher training college - making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country.

In 2003, Chester was granted its own degree-awarding powers, allowing it to be known as University College Chester once again. In 2005, University College Chester was finally awarded full university status and became the University of Chester.

Scholarships
- Music Scholarships; £800 fund for student with musical talent and who are willing to contribute to the Universitys music scene. A separate Organ scholarship, currently worth £750, is also on offer to a suitably qualified candidate.

- Choral Scholarships; £1750 award by audition, to students at Chester.

- Sports Scholarship; £500 award and sporting support for students deemed talented by the Director of Sport.

Rail:

Chester is well served by the railway network and has frequent, fast rail links to London and major cities in the UK. Journey times are: London 2hrs 40mins, Birmingham 1hr 45mins, Manchester 1hr. The University is twenty minutes' walk from Chester Railway Station, and a taxi will cost approximately £2.50. A free bus service runs at regular intervals between the Railway Station and Chester City Centre. Our Campus is only ten minutes' walk from the city centre.

Coach:

Chester has regular National Express Coach services from most towns and cities in the UK to the Delamere Street Bus Depot.

Road:

Chester is linked directly to the national motorway system via the M53, and London and all the major regions of the UK are easily accessible from the city. The Campus is situated at the junction of Cheyney Road and Parkgate Road (A540), which is a continuation of Northgate Street leading out from the city centre. Access to the main car park is by the Exton Park entrance.
