Brief history:

The Northampton Institute, from which City University originates, was established to provide for the education and welfare of the local population. It was constituted under the City of London Parochial Charities Act (1883), with the objective of "the promotion of the industrial skill, general knowledge, health and well-being of young men and women belonging to the poorer classes".

The City University was created by royal charter in 1966, following recommendations in the Robbins Report of 1963. Its objects are:

"to advance knowledge, wisdom and understanding by teaching, research and professional training, particularly in science and technology, both within the University and in close association with industry and commerce and by the example and influence of its corporate life to benefit society"

Undergraduate fees
- All courses set at £3070

Bursaries
- The City University Bursary; students receiving the full maintenance grant, will be guaranteed a City University Bursary of £1,000 a year.

Scholarships
- University Undergraduate Awards Scheme; cash prizes to students on programmes at City on the basis of academic achievement and financial need. Second- and third-year students may be considered for City Undergraduate Awards which are worth £500. A number of awards are reserved for students educated in the London boroughs of Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Haringey.

- Alumni Fund Scholarships; provided by former students of the University. Each year, five scholarships are available for £1,000 a year for three years. All first-year undergraduate students are eligible.

- Sir John Cass's Foundation; 10 scholarships a year to undergraduate students from inner London. The awards are worth £1000 a year for three years and are open to students who are under 25, have a residual household income of between £17,501 - £35,000 and good A-Level results.

- Worshipful Company of Saddlers; scholarships for students who completed their post- 16 education in Islington.

- Worshipful Company of Needlemakers Award; 1 award of £1000 to a first year student.

- Shirley Robson Memorial Scholarship; £1000 awarded to a student studying Music at City.

- Reeves Foundation; 1 scholarship valued at £1000 a year to a student from inner London.

- Cass Business School Scholarships; Awards of £750 for students with academic merit.

- City Law School Scholarships; 6 awards of £800 per year each to home fee-paying students on the undergraduate LLB programme. All scholarships are subject to satisfactory academic performance.

- School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Scholarships; Awards of up to £1000 for EU or Home students starting an honours degree in Engineering or Mathematics at City. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are renewable subject to academic performance.

Road:

Travel by rail to any London terminus and then by underground, by bus, or on foot. City is in close proximity to Liverpool Street, Kings Cross St Pancras, London Bridge and our main sites are within walking distance of walking distance of Farringdon, Barbican, Angel, Old Street and Moorgate stations.

- From Liverpool Street, take the Metropolitan (Maroon), Circle (Yellow) or Hammersmith and City Line and head westbound.

- From King's Cross St Pancras, take the Metropolitan (Maroon), Circle (Yellow) or Hammersmith and City Line and head eastbound or the Northern (Black) Line southbound.

- From London Bridge, take the Northern (Black) line and head northbound.

- From Paddington, take the Circle (Yellow) or Hammersmith and City Line and head eastbound.
