Brief history:

UEA admitted its first 87 undergraduate students - in English Studies and Biological Sciences - in 1963.
People in Norwich had begun to talk about setting up a university in the city as long ago as the last century, but it wasn’t until 1960, as the post-war ‘bulge’ generation was bringing about an expansion in higher education, that the University of East Anglia finally got the go-ahead.

UEA’s academic thinking was distinctive from the word go. The choice of ‘Do Different’ as the University’s motto was a deliberate signal that it was going to look at new ways of providing university education. At the heart of UEA’s innovative thinking was the principle of interdisciplinarity where related subjects are studied in combination with each other. UEA has continued to be academically innovative throughout its development.

Fees and bursaries:

Undergraduate fees
- All courses set at £3145 per annum (except Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Nursing and Midwifery)
- Foundation year zero set at £1225

Bursaries
- UEA Bursary; Students with a household income of less than £25 000 will receive £600, whilst those with an income between £25 000 and £60 000 will receive £300.

Scholarships
- Vice-Chancellor Prize Scholarships; 8 £4000 awards for students who demonstrate the strongest academic potential, and outstanding additional achievements, in their UCAS application.
- UEA Sports Scholarships; £1000 award for students competing in focused sports at a high standard. £500 for all other sports.
- UEA Music Scholarships; 6 choral scholarships available each year and one organ scholarship. Financial and musical support available.
- Pathway Scholarships; £500 award for students who achieve 3 As at A Level and are in receipt of a maintenance grant.
- Access scholarship; £500 awards for students on courses where there is a national shortage.
- UEA Science foundation year scholarship; £500 award for students who achieve an 80%+ average.
- UEA Medical foundation year scholarship; £500 award for students who achieve an 80%+ average.
- Arthur Miller Centre Scholarships; 25% of American Studies students studying abroad will receive a £600 travel scholarships.

Visiting

Rail:

Norwich is 1 hour 50 minutes by train from London and there is an Intercity link with the Midlands and the North via Peterborough. All trains arrive at Norwich Station. For more details ring the rail enquiry line on 08457 484950. From London the service is approximately hourly except on Sundays when the service runs every 2 hours. The easiest way to reach UEA from the station is by taxi (black cab £7.00, private hire £4.50 - the UEA Students Union recommends ABC Cars on 01603 666333) or bus.

Coach:

The coach takes about 3 hours from London and stops in the main bus station in Norwich. Coaches run to and from most major UK cities; you can ring 08705 80 80 80 for bus and coach enquiries.

Road:

Norwich is 111m/155km from London, 184m/258km from Manchester and 485m/680km from Glasgow. The easiest way to UEA is to go around the Southern Bypass (A47) until you reach the B1108 turnoff signoposted "Colney & University". Follow the B1108 into Norwich, passing through two sets of traffic lights. The University entrance will appear on your right immediately after a pedestrian crossing.

Buses:

Conveniently buses from the city run directly into the University. The fare from the city is around £1.30, depending where you get on. From the city to UEA, there are stops along St. Stephens Street or Castle Meadow plus a service that runs past the rail station. Just look for bus numbers 25, 26 or 27 to the University.
