Brief history:

In 1892 the newly formed county borough of West Ham celebrated its new powers by establishing a grand technical institute (see right). Within a year of its opening the place had largely burnt to the ground - undaunted the borough built a new building in its place.

Essex county council struggled to provide schools for the new LCC estate of Beacontree and to improve its technical education. The result was seen in the creation of two colleges at Walthamstow and Dagenham. The designation of the North East London Polytechnic where three colleges were fused into one and over 80 courses were designed and put into practice.

In 1992 The University of East London was formed.

Travel into the city/town of:

The Docklands campus is just ten minutes walk from City Airport, one of London’s five international airports. In fact, the campus looks out at the airport’s runway! Although originally geared towards business travel, City Airport is rapidly increasing its routes and offers easy and swift access to many European cities including Amsterdam, Belfast, Brussels, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris and Zurich. Rail:

Stratford Campus is easily accessible from mainline rail stations. From King's Cross/St Pancras, take the Northern Line to Moorgate, then change for the Central Line to Stratford. Also:

- From Liverpool Street, Stratford is just three stops away along the Central Line.
- From Fenchurch Street, the nearest tube station is Tower Hill. From here, take the Circle Line to Liverpool Street and change for the Central Line to Stratford.
- From Waterloo, take the Northern Line to Tottenham Court Road, and change here for the Central Line.
- From Paddington, take the Circle Line to Liverpool Street, then the Central Line to Stratford.

Docklands Campus is easily accessible from mainline rail stations. From King's Cross/St Pancras, take the Northern Line to Bank, then change for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Cyprus Station, which is at the entrance to UEL. Also:

- From Liverpool Street and Paddington, take the Circle Line to Tower Hill then walk to Tower gateway to change for the DLR to Cyprus.
- From Fenchurch Street, the nearest tube station is Tower gateway, from where you can take the DLR to Cyprus.
- From Waterloo, take the Jubilee Line to Canning Town, and change there for the DLR to Cyprus. You can also catch the DLR direct from Stratford Station.

Buses:

Stratford
- Bus routes 86, 104, 108, 158, 238, 241, 257, 262, 473 call at Stratford station. Buses 25 and 69 stop at Stratford Broadway.

Docklands
- Buses number 101 and 300 will take you from the Campus to East Ham Station (District line) or Wanstead Station (Central line) and the 262 will take you to Stratford. The 366 goes to Barking Station.
