Brief history:

After earlier beginnings, university education in Exeter began in 1922 with the conversion of the previous Royal Albert Memorial College into the University College of the South West of England, and the college's inclusion on the list of institutions eligible to receive funds from the then University Grants Committee. At that time the college was conceived as a territorial institution, making university education available relatively locally for students from the four counties of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.

As was customary for new university institutions in southern England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the college prepared students for external degrees of the University of London. With further growth in the 1920s and 1930s, it was granted increasing autonomy, but full independence was delayed by the Second World War. The university college received its Royal Charter and became the free-standing University of Exeter in December 1955.

Venues
- The Ram (Streatham Campus) has a pubby atmosphere & is open till 11pm everyday. Wide range of local drinks on offer as well as the usual poison.
- Lemmy (Streatham Campus), the newly refurbished, modern looking nightclub has seen some great acts including GLC and Dizzee Rascal. Converts into a very good nightclub for major SU clubnights. Serves coffee and snacks during the day. Also includes the Ewe Bar, which is popular with sports teams because of the big screens on offer.
- Cross Keys (St Lukes) is also a steady nightclub with a capacity of 700, quiz nights and themed parties the range here.
- Northcott Theatre, Exeter’s professional repertory theatre holds many internal and external productions throughout the year.

Student Media
- XTV is the student guilds own TV station that broadcasts throughout the campuses.
- Xpression FM is the student guilds own radio station.
- Exepose is the students guilds newspaper and is highly regarded.

Volunteering:

Community Action is the student volunteering organisation within the Exeter University Student's Guild and is relatively good at keeping budding volunteers happy. Projects with disadvantaged children and the elderly are popular.
RAG (raise and give) put their heart and soul into events such as concerts and fashion shows.

- UK Access to Exeter Bursary; An award between £305 and £2000 depending on your level of the government maintenance grant.

- South West Access to Exeter Bursary; 70 £2000 awards for students from partner colleges in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. Priority given to students with low household incomes.

- Travel bursary; £750 award available for students studying abroad.

Scholarships
- Vice-Chancellor's excellence scholarships; 10 £5000 awards for students who engage with the community or display entrepreneurial skills
- Jubilee science scholarship; rewards top performing science students with up to £3,000 per year.

- Camborne School of Mines scholarships of £2,000 are on offer to UK and overseas students on geology, mining engineering and renewable energy courses at the Cornwall campus

- Sports scholarship; £500 - £2000 awards plus a special package of training for high achieving athletes.

Rail:

Streatham Campus
- Exeter has two railway stations - Exeter St. David's (main station) and Central. Exeter St. David's Station is approximately 10 minutes walk from the Streatham Campus and taxis are available. The average journey time from London Paddington is 2 hours 30 minutes to Exeter.

Directions to the University (Streatham Campus) from Exeter St. David's Station
- The University is located half a mile from St. David's Station. Leave the station via the main booking hall, and walk across the forecourt keeping to the right of the car parking area. You will meet Bonhay Road. Cross over at the zebra crossing. Turn left, and almost immediately right into a passageway called St. Clement's Lane. Follow this up the hill; it comes out on to St. David's Hill. Cross over and continue up the road opposite (Howell Road). You will then meet New North Road. Cross over at the zebra crossing, and turn left. The next major turning on the right is Streatham Drive. Take this, and fork left after a short distance (still called Streatham Drive). You will see a large map of the campus.

Road:

Streathem Campus

From the M5
- Leave the M5 at Junction 29, signed Exeter Airport.

- At the traffic lights at the end of the motorway off slip road, turn right onto the B3015, signed City Centre, and at the first roundabout turn right, signed Exeter Business Park.

- Go straight over at the next two roundabouts, signed Pinhoe, and join the Monkerton Link Road. At the traffic lights bear left onto the B3212, signed City Centre. Take the right-hand lane and at the second set of traffic lights turn right, signed University.

- Pass under the railway bridge (Polsloe Bridge), drive up the hill and at the fourth set of traffic lights turn right onto Mount Pleasant Road, signed University. (Henry's Bar is on the corner of this junction.)

- At the first roundabout take the second exit onto Union Road. Go straight over at the first set of traffic lights onto Prince of Wales Road. After a set of pedestrian crossing traffic lights the road curves to the left and the University’s Stocker Road entrance is on your right. Use this entrance for the main car parks, the Great Hall, Northcott Theatre, Xfi, and the Innovation Centre (see the Streatham Campus map).

- Continue along Prince of Wales Road and the University’s Streatham Drive entrance is on your right. Use this entrance for Holland Hall, Reed Hall and the Sports Park (see the Streatham Campus map).

From the East via A303/A30
- After the junction with the M5 (J29) follow the signs for Exeter Business Park. The route then follows the directions given under ‘From the M5’.

From the West via the A30
- If you are unfamiliar with Exeter or are travelling at peak times, when this route can be congested, we recommend that you join the M5 and follow the instructions from Junction 29.

- Alternatively, leave the A30 at the Dawlish and Marsh Barton turning. Turn left at the large roundabout into Alphington Spur (A377), which becomes Alphington Road. Continue on this road until the large Exe Bridges roundabout; Riverside Leisure Centre is on your left.

- Take the third exit (Bonhay Road), signed Exeter St David’s station. After passing the station on your left, turn sharp right at a double roundabout onto St David's Hill.

- Turn left at the first mini roundabout and then left at the next set of traffic lights into New North Road. Take the second right into Streatham Drive and the University’s Streatham Drive entrance is on your left. Use this entrance for Holland Hall, Reed Hall and the Sports Park.

- For the University’s Stocker Road entrance bear right along Prince of Wales Road. As the road curves to the right the entrance is on your left. Use this entrance for the main car parks, the Great Hall, Northcott Theatre, Xfi, and the Innovation Centre.

St Lukes Campus

From the M5
- Leave the M5 at Junction 29, signed Exeter Airport.

- At the traffic lights at the end of the motorway off slip road, turn right onto the B3015, signed City Centre. Go straight over at the first roundabout onto Honiton Road; Honiton Road Park & Ride will be on your left. Pass under the railway bridge and go straight over at the roundabout.

- At the traffic lights fork right, signed Heavitree/City Centre. Stay on this road until it becomes Fore Street (Heavitree) and you reach the shopping parade at Heavitree. At the traffic lights at the top of the hill, just after the Catholic Church on your right, fork left into Magdalen Road.

- Go straight over at the traffic lights, signed University (St Luke’s). The St Luke’s Campus Magdalen Road entrance is approximately 500 metres on the right. Please note that visitors may park in Magdalen Road Car Park only if they have a daily parking permit provided by the University. Permits must be obtained in advance from the relevant School. Visitors without permits are advised that the nearest public car park is at The Triangle, off Heavitree Road.

- For the public car park take the following route from Fore Street (Heavitree). At the traffic lights at the top of the hill, fork right into Heavitree Road. Go straight over at the traffic lights, and past the St Luke’s Campus Heavitree Road entrance on your left opposite the police station. Continue on Heavitree Road and the car park is on the right before the roundabout.

From the East via A303/A30
- After the junction with the M5 (J29) follow the signs for Exeter Business Park. The route then follows the directions given under 'From the M5'.

- Take the fourth exit into Western Way (B3212), signed inner bypass. At the third set of traffic lights, go straight over onto Magdalen Street (inner bypass). At the left-hand bend take the right lane and turn right into Magdalen Road. Go straight over at the traffic lights adjacent to the Mount Radford Public House. The St Luke’s Campus Magdalen Road entrance is on your left. Please note that visitors may park in Magdalen Road Car Park only if they have a daily parking permit provided by the University. Permits must be obtained in advance from the relevant School. Visitors without permits are advised that the nearest public car park is at The Triangle, off Heavitree Road.

- For the public car park take the following route from Western Way. Follow the inner bypass until you reach the first roundabout outside the bus station. Take the fourth exit onto Heavitree Road. After about 100 metres, follow the signs to the car park on your left. The St Luke’s Campus Heavitree Road entrance is on the right-hand side of Heavitree Road within walking distance of the car park.
