Brief history:

In 1891 the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths set up a Technical and Recreative Institute, using the former Royal Naval School in New Cross as its base. In 1904 the Institute was acquired by the University of London and re-established as Goldsmiths' College. The apostrophe was removed in a rebranding in 1993. Shortly after the acquisition, in 1907, the college added a new arts building, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, to the back of the main building. During the Second World War it was decided to evacuate the students and faculty of the college to the University College, Nottingham (now the University of Nottingham), a decision that proved wise when the main building was struck by an incendiary bomb and gutted in 1940 (the building was finally repaired in 1947).

During the 1960s the college experienced a rapid expansion in student numbers and the main building was expanded and the Lockwood Building, Whitehead Building, Education Building, Warmington Tower and St James's Hall were all built during this period in order to accommodate the new students. In 1988 Goldsmiths became a full college of the University of London and in 1990 received its Royal Charter.

Rail:

From Central London: frequent direct trains run from Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Cannon Street or London Bridge Stations to either New Cross or New Cross Gate Stations; the journey usually takes about 10 minutes. If a direct train isn’t listed, or you are travelling from Blackfriars Station, then we recommend you catch the first available train and change at London Bridge for either New Cross or New Cross Gate. At London Bridge Station, New Cross Gate trains usually leave from Platforms 11-15; New Cross trains leave from Platform 1 or 4.

From South East London and Kent: There are direct services to New Cross Station from Orpington, Sidcup, Hayes, Dartford and Sevenoaks. Change at Lewisham from other lines.From South London, Surrey and Sussex: New Cross Gate Station has direct services from Caterham, Crystal Palace, Epsom and Tattenham Corner. Change at East or West Croydon or Norwood Junction from other lines.

From New Cross Station: turn right out of the station, and right again into New Cross Road. For the Richard Hoggart Building, cross New Cross Road at the pedestrian crossing into Amersham Road, keeping on the right hand side. Follow the road round to the right into Parkfield Road. The Richard Hoggart Building is straight ahead, at the junction of Parkfield Road and Lewisham Way. For Deptford Town Hall Building and Ben Pimlott Building, cross the road, turn right and walk along New Cross Road, past Dixon Road and Laurie Grove (both on the left). Deptford Town Hall Building is on your left hand side. The entrance to Ben Pimlott Buildlng is in St James, which is the next road on the left.

From New Cross Gate: turn left out of the station, cross the road at the pedestrian lights. For Deptford Town Hall Building, turn left; the Building is on your right. For the Richard Hoggart Building, turn left and walk along New Cross Road, past Laurie Grove (on the right) on to Lewisham Way, past the glass-fronted Rutherford Information Services Building, and cross over Dixon Road (on the right). The Richard Hoggart Building is on the right immediately after this, behind the brick wall. For the Ben Pimlott Building, turn right when you cross the road at the pedestrian lights, and take the first left into St James. You will see the entrance through to the large metal Building on the left hand side, just before the nursery

Road:

Goldsmiths is on Lewisham Way on the New Cross one-way system, at the junction of the A2 and A20. Lewisham Way is an extremely busy Red Route (no parking or waiting at any time); you cannot stop on the main road, but you can pull in to the front of the Richard Hoggart Building to let passengers out.

From Central London: Take the A2 towards Dover, via the Old Kent Road; at the end of the Old Kent Road (on the New Cross Gate one-way system) turn into New Cross Road. Keep in the right hand lane and shortly after Sainsbury's take the A20 fork to Lewisham. Turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way - Goldsmiths is on the left downhill.

From Kent, Surrey, Sussex, or from the north if using Blackwall Tunnel or Dartford River Crossing (southbound): Follow the A2 or A20 towards London (using M25 or South Circular Road to join the nearest of these):On the A20, after passing through Lewisham, the Richard Hoggart (redbrick) Building is clearly visible on the left after about one mile.On the A2, follow the left turn after New Cross Station, turn right at the traffic lights into Lewisham Way - Goldsmiths is on the left downhill.ParkingPlease note: parking on campus is reserved for those with mobility difficulties.

Buses:

To and from central or South East London: Goldsmiths is on the following bus routes: 21, 36, 136, 171, 172, 177, 225, 321, 343, 436, 453. Buses run every 15 minutes throughout the day from Charing Cross, Victoria, Waterloo or London Bridge stations to New Cross Gate, New Cross and Lewisham; the journey time is about 45 minutes from Central London

Underground:

New Cross and New Cross Gate are both at the southern end of the East London Line. This can be reached from anywhere on the underground system, as follows:
- Changing at Whitechapel Station, from the District or Hammersmith and City lines
- Changing at Shadwell Station, from the Docklands Light Railway
- Changing at Canada Water Station, from the Jubilee Line.

Local trains:

You may also find it convenient to travel by Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to either Deptford Bridge Station, about 10 minutes’ walk from the College, or Lewisham Station, about 12 minutes by bus. For people with mobility difficulties, there is a lift at Deptford Bridge DLR and step-free access from Lewisham DLR.
