Brief history:

The university traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country’s first part-time day-release and sandwich courses.

Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it the diverse strengths it has today in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970 and university status awarded in 1992. It subsequently became the University of Greenwich

- Avery Hill Accommodation is approximately 20 minutes walk from the busy High Street shopping centre in Eltham. The accommodation is open to students from all campuses as well as those based at Avery Hill (It is 6 miles from Greenwich). The university has established a regular peak time bus service between the Village and the Greenwich campus as well as a scheduled service between Avery Hill and the Medway campus. Public transport by bus is available between Avery Hill and Greenwich (journey time is approximately 40 minutes).
- Greenwich Accommodation sees Cutty Sark Hall and Devonport House next to the campus, whilst Binnie Court and the McMillan Student Village are within a 10 minute walk.

Undergraduate fees

Bursaries
- Greenwich partnership bursary scheme; A fee discount bursary of £500 per year (maximum of 3 years, years 2 and 3 dependent on satisfactory progress) for UK students who qualify for means-tested government-funded grants.
- Medway School of Pharmacy bursary; £305 awarded to students receiving the full government grant.
- Greenwich Financial Support Fund; £250 000 fund for students who come into financial difficulty whilst studying.

Scholarships

Rail:

Charing Cross, Cannon Street, Waterloo East and London Bridge all offer direct services to Greenwich Station on the Dartford/Gravesend via Greenwich and Woolwich line. If you are travelling from Kent, alight at Maze Hill.
How to get to Greenwich Campus by London Underground
The nearest tube station is North Greenwich; then take a 188 bus to the campus. A better option is to use the DLR. Take the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf and change to the DLR. Take a Lewisham-bound train to Cutty Sark Station.

How to get to Avery Hill Campus by rail
Charing Cross, Cannon Street, Waterloo East and London Bridge all offer direct services to Eltham Station and Falconwood Station on the Dartford via Bexleyheath line, and to New Eltham on the Dartford via Sidcup line.

How to get to Medway Campus by rail and bus
Chatham Station is part of the South Eastern network with direct services from London Victoria, Charing Cross, Cannon Street, Waterloo East, London Bridge, Greenwich and Dartford. Connections are available throughout the region. From Chatham station, a special term-time bus, operated by Chalkwell (No 2), operates to the campus. Other routes operated by Arriva and King's Ferry to Medway Universities, Dockside Outlet Centre and St Mary's Island pass the campus.

Road:

Greenwich Campus
- From the M25 take the A2 (Junction 2) towards London. The distance is approximately 10 miles. Leave at Danson Interchange and take the third exit from the roundabout with the Sainsbury's Petrol Station to your left, A210 signposted Blackfen and Eltham.

- At Blackfen traffic lights continue straight ahead with the Woodman Public House on your right. At the next traffic lights turn left. Mansion site is the first turn on the right and Southwood site is the second turning on the right.

- Mansion and Southwood sites are only 5 minutes walk from one another across a very pleasant park. We have provided separate directions because sometimes it rains in south-east London.

Medway Campus
- From the M25, take to A2 southbound (Junction 2) signposted Canterbury. After approx. six miles at the junction where the A2 and the M2 split, take the far left lane and follow signs to Gillingham and Grain, A289. There are also a number of brown signs with an anchor and the words "Historic Chatham". These signs will guide you all the way to the campus.

- At the first roundabout take the second exit towards Gillingham. At the next roundabout, turn left, still the A289. At the roundabout at the bottom of the hill, turn left and drive through the Medway Tunnel. Take the first exit after leaving the tunnel. At the roundabout take the third exit. At the first roundabout turn left and then right into the campus.

Avery Hill Campus

- Cutty Sark Station is just 211 paces from the campus. Direct services run from Bank, Canary Wharf and Lewisham and easy connections are available from Tower Gateway, Beckton and Stratford.
