Brief history:

The name Heriot-Watt commemorates George Heriot – the 16th century financier to King James, and James Watt – the great 18th century inventor and engineer. The University originated as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, founded in 1821 as the world’s first Mechanics Institute, which revolutionised access to education. An early pioneer of equal opportunities, women were welcomed as early as 1869 – 20 years ahead of other institutions – and in 1966 Heriot-Watt became a University by Royal Charter.

Undergraduate fees
- All courses at £1735 per year for students from Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

Scholarships
- Sports scholarships; £500-£1500 awards for students competing at, or near, national level.

- Alumni fund scholarships; £500 awards for each year of study. Students must demonstrate high academic performance.

- Scholarships for UK domiciled students; £500 awards for each year of study. Often given to those embarking on a science and engineering degree.

Visiting

Rail:

- The mainline rail network serves the centre of Edinburgh well. Edinburgh Waverly is at the east end of Princes Street and Haymarket station is at the west end.

Coach:

- All national coach services to Edinburgh arrive at St Andrew Square bus station, situated at the east end of Princes Street.

Road:

- Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh Campus is easily accessible by car, both from the centre of Edinburgh (6 miles) and from all major routes leading to the city.
- The University is half a mile from the Calder Junction of the A720 City of Edinburgh By-Pass and the A71 (there are signs for Heriot-Watt University on the approach to Calder Junction).
On the M8, from Glasgow, turn right at Hermiston Gait roundabout following the signs for the A71.
- The A720 is a dual carriageway which skirts Edinburgh and can be accessed from all the major routes entering and leaving the city: A90 (North), M8 and M9 (West), A702 (South and M6), A7 and A68 (Borders and South), A1 (South and East).

Park and Ride
- The X40 service runs Monday to Friday from Dunfermline via Ferrytoll Park and Ride, South Queensferry, Gyle Centre and South Gyle to our Edinburgh Campus at Riccarton. The morning journey starts at Ferrytoll at 08.00 and arrives at Riccarton at 09.00. This service continues on a hourly basis throughout the day with a last journey departing Ferrytoll at 18.15.

Buses:

- The journey to Heriot-Watt University by bus takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes from the city centre. Lothian Buses offers services 25, 25X, 34, 45 and N25 to Heriot-Watt University.
- The 25 departs from Princes Street, via Haymarket, Gorgie Road and Sighthill. The 25X has a limited stop route beginning at Waterloo Place via Princes Street, Lothian Road and running non-stop to Sighthill before arriving at Heriot-Watt University. The 34 departs from Princes Street via Lothian Road, Fountainbridge, Slateford Road and Sighthill.
- The 25 is the most frequent bus to the Edinburgh Campus, leaving the city centre every 15 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes after 20.30. During peak times in the morning and evening, Monday to Friday, the 25X runs to the Edinburgh Campus every 15-20 minutes.
- The 25 runs until midnight, after which time Lothian Buses operate the N25, an hourly night bus to the Edinburgh Campus from Waverly train station via Princes Street, Haymarket, Balgreen and Sighthill.
- The 45 leaves from St Andrew Square via The Mound, Tollcross, Bruntsfield, Merchiston and Craiglockhart. This service operates every 30 minutes, Monday to Friday, from 06.30 to 18.30.
- First Buses run the 427 service which starts at Waterloo Place via Haymarket and Sighthill. Passengers can disembark at Hermiston, from this point it is an approximate 10-15 minute walk to the Edinburgh campus. This service runs from Monday to Friday.
- Bus service schedules and prices are available on company websites and are subject to change. Enquiries should be made directly to the company.

Taxis:

- Central Radio Taxis telephone 0131 229 2468 (24 hrs)

- There are a number of taxi services in the centre of Edinburgh including those at Waverly Station (rail) and St Andrew Square (coach station).

- The journey to Heriot-Watt University takes about 30 minutes. At the Edinburgh campus, taxis can be requested from the reception desk in the James Watt Centre.
