Brief history:

In 1951, the de Havilland company gave land in Hatfield adjoining the A1 to Hertfordshire County Council for educational use in perpetuity; the Council used this to build and operate Hatfield Technical College, which trained aerospace engineers for Hatfield's then-dominant aerospace industry. In 1967 it became an early polytechnic. With the passage of the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992, the institution gained university status and became self-governing rather than controlled by the county council.

- University of Hertfordshire bursary; awards equivalent to 50% of your means tested LA/SLC grant assessment, if you are awarded a local authority maintenance grant.
- College awards; £1500 award for students who previously studied at collaborative partner colleges.

Scholarships
- University of Hertfordshire Chancellor’s scholarship; £2500 award for students who gain at least 360 UCAS tariff points.

- University of Hertfordshire Science and Engineering scholarships; Awards of £1,000 per year for the first two years and £500 for each subsequent year. For student who gain at least 280 UCAS points.

- Beds, Bucks and Herts Society of Chartered Accountants Scholarship; 3 £1000 awards for students from Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire who show outstanding academic achievement at the time of application to an accountancy programme.

- Tesco plc Marketing scholarship; 1 £1000 award for a student who achieves an average of above 60% in their first semester of the BA Marketing programme.

- Hertford Choral Scholarship; 1 £1200 per annum award for the student with the best audition.

- Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce Scholarship; 1 £1000 per annum scholarship for the highest achieving students on the BSc Management Sciences.

Rail:

- The University is an 8 minute bus ride from Hatfield station (bus no. 603, 341, 641). Services (First Capital Connect) from Hatfield station run into London Kings Cross (22 mins) and Moorgate (40 mins).
There are also local services from Cambridge and Peterborough.

- Direct local trains between Hatfield and Stevenage (15 mins) connect with Intercity services to and from the North and Scotland.

- The University can also be reached via St Albans City station and a 16 minute bus ride (bus no. 602, 655). Services from St Albans City station (Thameslink) connect with Kings Cross (25 mins), Luton (15 mins), and Bedford (35 mins).

Road:

Travel from M25
- From all directions on the M25, head for Junction 23 with the A1(M). The University is served by the A1(M) motorway, and is roughly 3 miles from the M25. Exit at Junction 3 take the third exit and follow the road around into the main College Lane Campus.
For the de Havilland Campus, take the second exit off the roundabout onto Comet Way. Travel half a mile to the next roundabout and turn left, and then right at the next roundabout. The University is on the left.

Travel from M1
- For those travelling from the North down the M1, exit at Junction 7, which takes you onto the M10. Travel along for about 3 miles to the next roundabout and take the second exit onto the A414. Keep to this road for about 3 miles following signs to Hatfield. When you get to Junction 3 with the A1(M) take the second exit and follow the road around into the main College Lane Campus.
For the de Havilland Campus, take the first exit off the roundabout onto Comet Way. Travel half a mile to the next roundabout and turn left, and then right at the next roundabout. The University is on the left.
Travel from A1(M) - from the South and North

- The University campus is served by the A1(M) motorway. Exit at Junction 3, take the third exit if travelling from the South, (first if coming from the North) and follow the road around into the main College Lane Campus.
For the de Havilland Campus, take the second exit if travelling from the South (Third if from the North) off the roundabout onto Comet Way. Travel half a mile to the next roundabout and turn left, and then right at the next roundabout. The University is on the left.
