Brief history:

University College Hull was founded in 1927 through the support of local benefactors, such as Thomas Robinson Ferens (who gave the land and £250,000), G F Grant and the City Council. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of York (later George VI) in 1928, and the College opened in October with 39 students and 14 ‘one-man’ departments. The milestone of 100 students was reached in 1931.

The first Principal, Arthur Morgan, was succeeded in 1935 by John Nicholson (‘Nicky’), who led the campaign to achieve the College's independence, which eventuated on 13 May 1954. A Royal Charter was granted and the University of Hull became a separate institution with the right to award its own degrees – it was Yorkshire’s third university and England's 14th.

Location
Hull campus
- Needler Hall and The Lawns are over 3 miles from campus, whilst Thwaite Hall is just over one mile. The 105 bus connects these halls and the campus. Taylor Court Flats are conviniently on campus but are the least liveliest, with a high mature and international student population.
Scarborough Campus
- Cayley Hall and Filey Road Annexe are both on campus. The university owned houses are within a mile.

- Asylum is the £3.5 million nightclub, which has a 1000+ capacity and looks the business.
- Armstrong Bar houses some cool events of its own and is a little more intimate compared to its big brother, Asylum.
- Sanctuary Bar is the pub like one with a beer garden, big screen TV, good food and real ale
- John McCarthy Bar is pretty lively too, especially on a Wednesday with most sport socials being there.

- University of Hull (UoH) bursary; Students receiving the full maintenance grant or have an annual residual income of less than £22500 will be awarded a further £1000 per annum.Students with an annual residual household income between £22501 and £38330 will be awarded £500 per annum.

- Local bursary scheme; 30 £500 awards for high achieving students with a HU, YO or DN postcode.

Scholarships

Route South via Humber Bridge
- M62 becomes A63
- Take A15/A164 Humber Bridge exit from A63 (Signposted Hessle & Universities)
- At roundabout at top of slip road take exit marked Humber Bridge and Beverley - straight over.
- At next roundabout turn left (exit marked A164 beverley, A1079 York)
- Those coming over the Humber Bridge
- At next roundabout (with Swanbridge Vetinary Practice on the right) go straight ahead.
- At next roundabout go straight ahead, exit marked Beverley, York, Universities and Cottingham. (Beefeater Pub ‘The Ketch’ on the right and Waitrose ahead)
- At next roundabout go straight ahead (Total Fitness Leisure Centre on right)
- At next roundabout ignore signs for University and go straight ahead marked Skidby Mill, Beverley, York.
- At following roundabout (Skidby Mill on left) turn right, third exit following signs for the Lawns, Cottingham.
- Road slopes downhill and you pass a school on your left, followed by some houses.
- At small roundabout with police station on the left you are at the Lawns
- Continue straight ahead and you will see signs for Needler Hall, at next roundabout you are at Needler Hall

- Go through Bishop Burton passing the college and the Altisodora pub on your left
- Continue to a roundabout, take 3rd exit signposted A1079 Hull/Humber Bridge
- After approx 1 mile this becomes a dual carriage way, half way along there is a left hand turn (slip road) signposted Cottingham/Beverley - take this exit
- At end of slip lane turn right at T-Junction (signposted Cottingham)
- Follow road to large roundabout and take first turning left signposted Cottingham/Hull (also the Lawns)

Scarborough campus

From York:
- Follow the A64 to Scarborough. As you get close you will pass Morrisons on your right and the railway will be on your left. Continue to follow signs towards the town centre. You will cross the railway on a large roundabout. Continue to town centre.
- You will now enter a speed-restricted area. Watch out for the retail park on your right starting with Polar Ford Garage. The last outlet is B&Q.
- When you reach the mini roundabout (look out for B&Q on your right) turn right onto Queen Margaret's Road and follow signposts for the University (also signposted Bridlington A165, Filey A1039)
- Follow the road for about half a mile until you get to a mini roundabout. Turn right and follow the signs for the University (also signposted Bridlington, A165)
- Follow this road for about half a mile. The University Campus is at the top of the hill on your right just after

Scarborough College.

From M62 (eastbound)
- The best route depends on the pointat which you join the M62*
- Trans-Pennine travellers are advised to exit the M62 onto the northbound M1. The M1 merges with the A1, and almost at once the A64 York is indicated for the left lane. Follow A64 York then A64 Scarborough. Then follow the instructions given above for the A64 approach.
- If you are on the M62 at a point closer to Hull than the A1 junction we suggest you consult your own map to determine whether to approach Scarborough via Driffield or via the coastal route.
- If you approach via Driffield you will join the A64 below Staxton Hill. Follow A64 instructions from that point.
- If you approach from the coastal route see Hull/Bridlington below.

From Hull, Bridlington
- Follow the A165, signposted for Scarborough.
- Soon after the Welcome to Scarborough sign you will enter a speed restricted residential area. You will go down and up two hills before a climb with open space to your left (a golf course). At the top of the climb is the campus. It is signposted on your left.

Buses:

Hull Campus
- For those people not travelling by car and choosing to travel by train there is a taxi rank at the railway station that will bring you to the University, or to a hall of residence. Alternatively the following buses stop outside of the University - 103, 104, 105 and 16A. Due to exciting work being carried out to create a new transport interchange and shopping complex the bus station has temporarily moved to Albion St, staff at the station will be able to give you directions.

Scarborough Campus
- For those who may choose to travel by train there is a taxi rank at the station. Alternatively you could take the number 7 bus from the Bus Stop a little way down the main shopping area.
