Brief history:

Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, an independent constituent part of the University of London, was founded in 1907. Situated in South Kensington, London's scientific and cultural heartland, it was formed from the merger of the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines.
St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the National Heart and Lung Institute merged with the College in 1988 and 1995 respectively.

Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School merged with the College on 1 August 1997 to complete the formation of Imperial College School of Medicine (ICSM).

The grant of arms made to Imperial College by Royal Warrant of King Edward VII dated 6 June 1908 uses the peculiar language of heraldry, a mixture of Norman French Latin and modern idiom as familiar to the College of Heralds as chemical formulae to a chemist. The College arms are simple, confined to a shield, and display the Royal Arms together with a book representing knowledge. The motto can be translated as "knowledge is the adornment and protection of the State".

Locations
- Beit Hall is located in the Beit Quadrangle just across the road from the South Kensington Campus, next to the Royal Albert Hall.
- Bernard Sunley Hall is located in Evelyn Gardens which is close to the Fulham Road and King's Road in Chelsea. It is a 20-minute walk to the South Kensington Campus as is Fisher Hall, Willis Jackson Hall and Holbein Hall, which are also found in Evelyn Gardens.
- The Boathouse is within cycling distance of the South Kensington Campus, which takes about twenty minutes.
- The Commonwealth Hall is located in the West End close to Russell Square. The nearest Underground Stations to the are Euston, Russell Square and Kings Cross.It is a 40-minute journey by tube to South Kensington.
- Southside Hall is located on the south side of Prince's Gardens, next to Exhibition Road on the South Kensington Campus. Garden Hall is located on the north side of Prince's Gardens, as is Southwell Hall next to Exhibition Road on the South Kensington Campus.
- Orient House forms part of the extensive Chelsea Harbour development but is a healthy 40 minutes walk to campus.
- The Nutford House hall is located in the West End close to Marble Arch. It is a 20-minute journey by bus to the South Kensington Campus or a 30 minute walk
- Pembridge Hall is located in the heart of Notting Hill Gate. It is a 25-minute walk to the South Kensington Campus or alternatively three stops on the Underground.
- Piccadilly Court is located in Caledonian Road close to Camden. The hall is a short walk from Caledonian Road tube station. It is a 40-minute journey by tube to South Kensington.
- Wilson House is located to the north of Hyde Park in Paddington. It is a 20-minute walk or a 20-minute bus ride.
- Weeks Hall is located on the north side of Prince's Gardens, next to Exhibition Road on the South Kensington Campus.

Student union & social clubs:

Venues
- Da Vinci's has seen some investment, more of a cafe coffee shop atmosphere to it nowadays. Sees quizzes, live sport and comedy at night.
- Union Bar is a wood furnished pub. Warm, cosy and friendly feel to it and is the main drinking establishment for the sports teams. Wonder if the 200+ types of pint on offer have anything to that with that.
- dBs is the 450 capacity SU nightclub. Fridays see the events team put on a very good show. Also home to Jazz band nights for those who like to jam.
- Gallery Bar is better suited to serving food rather alcohol. Still makes for a good function area when clubs or societies want it.

Arts Scenes
- The Concert hall (Cap. 450) keeps arty societies happy with numerous productions and musical events being held there throughout term. Also converts into a cheap cinema when it wants to.
- The Great hall (Cap.600) is used for slightly bigger productions, gives students further opportunity to showcase their talents.
- Soundproof rehearsal space for student bands

Student Media
- IRC (Imperial College Radio) is the student radio station that broadcasts over the net and on 1134AM.
- Stoic TV (Student Television of Imperial College) is the SUsTV station.
- Felix is the weekly newspaper, which is joint run by the SU and University.

Academic Scholarships
- Grocers' Company Queen's Golden Jubilee Scholarship; £2000 per annum award awarded on the basis of academic merit for students in the Faculty of Engineering.
- Holligrave Scholarships; 1 £1500 per annum award is available to a UK national holding a conditional firm or unconditional offer of admission to a course within the Faculty of Engineering. Student will be from educationally and financially disadvantaged backgrounds
- Imperial College student opportunities fund scholarships; £1000 per annum for exceptional candidates who come from educationally and financially disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Roy White Scholarships (one for Engineering, one for Natural Sciences) and Rolls-Royce Engineering Scholarship for Energy Efficient Technologies award are awarded as premium scholarships at £5,000 per annum subject to satisfactory progress and academic performance.
- R.W. Barnes Educational Fund; £2000 per annum awards for students living within a 40-mile radius of Beckington in Somerset and holding offers for courses in engineering, mathematics or physics.
- School of Medicine scholarships; £100 to £500 awards for periods of between one and six years for students who perform well at interview, essay and examination results at the time of entry.

Music Scholarships
- Ash Music Scholarships; Music tuition for students with a distinction in grade eight or equivalent.

Sports Scholarships
- Developing excellence scheme; £2000 award for students who aspire to compete nationally or internationally.
- Rowing Scholarships; 3 £5000 awards for students who row at a sufficiently high standard with links/aspirations to national squad level who will be taking up a place at Imperial College.
- Cockburn rugby scholarships; 2 (1 male & 1 female) £1000 per annum awards for
School of Medicine students who show evidence of ability at rugby football at the minimum first XV level at school or preferably county level.

Underground:

South Kensington Campus
- The nearest London Underground stations to the main campus are South Kensington and Gloucester Road.

Royal Brompton campus
- Sloane Square (on the Circle and District lines) and South Kensington (Piccadilly, Circle and District lines) are the nearest Underground stations. All other travel is as for the Imperial College campus.

St Mary's campus
- As for the South Kensington campus, but take the Underground train (Bakerloo, Circle or District Line) to Paddington station. St Mary's is only five minutes' walk along Praed Street.
