Brief history:

The University was first founded on Beverley Farm in 1962 due to continuing demand for a university in the local area. Three years later the University received its Royal Charter on January 4, 1965. The first chancellor was Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent.

In 2007 the University decided to get a new image with a complete rebranding of the logo, prospectus and website.

Venues
- Rutherford Bar is the SUs newly acquired bar and is some hefty changes at the minute. Should look good when it's all finished.
- The Venue is the SU nightclub. With a capacity of 1300 it can be compared to the best of them despite a big portion of cheese.
- Woody's bar is in the heart of Park Wood. Nice looking bar with a warm atmosphere. Normally something going everynight including some ledge themed parties.
- The Lighthouse is a cafe bar during the day and provides students with an excuse for a quick snack. Becomes a fast food outlet when the Venue fills up.
- The Sports Cafe, Kitchen and BBs coffee shop all keep students hunger at bay.

Student Media
- CSR Radio is the student radio station jointly run with Caterbury Christ Church.
- inQuire is a 3-weekly newspaper produced entirely by Kent University students.

Arts Scene
- The music department is particuarly strong with a choir, symphony orchestra, concert band, big band and chamber choir all on offer. Student bands and musicians get use of most facilities too.
- The Gulbenkian the campus theatre, which seats 340 and presents student, professional and amateur shows throughout the year.
- Gulbenkian Cinema is the SU cinema, shows many independant films and is highly regarded by those with an interest in cinema. Also shows mainstream films too.

Volunteering:

Kent Union is proud to be the first Students' Union in the country to have achieved the 'Investing in Volunteers' status. There are plenty of opportunities to help out within the SU as well as the local community. Dedicated volunteers get presented with awards at the annual volunteering event.

- Music scholarships; 10 £1000 awards for students who can demonstrate muscial excellence and who perform well in a written essay.
- Sports scholarships; £1000 awards for students who achieve a high standard of performance whilst at university. £2000 award for excellent cricket, rugby and hockey players

Rail:

Canterbury site by rail from:
- London (Victoria) to Canterbury East: Journey time approx. 85 minutes. Mondays to Saturdays two trains an hour (one direct, one change at Faversham). Sundays - direct hourly service.
- London (Charing Cross or Waterloo East) to Canterbury West: Journey time approx. 90 minutes. Monday to Friday - direct hourly service through most of the day.
- Dover - Direct trains from Dover Priory to Canterbury East every half hour on weekdays (hourly on Sundays). Journey time approx. 30 minutes.
- Ramsgate - direct trains from Ramsgate to Canterbury West every half hour on weekdays (hourly on Sundays). Journey time approx. 20 minutes.

Medway site by rail from:
- Chatham train station is the most accessible station for the campus and has regular services from Charing Cross, Waterloo East, London Bridge, Cannon Street, London Victoria, Ramsgate and Dover. Call 08457 48 49 50 for train times and further information. There is a taxi rank and various bus stops outside Chatham train station. A taxi to the campus from the station will take approximately 10 minutes or see information about buses.

- Dover - Direct trains from Dover Priory to Chatham every half hour on weekdays (hourly on Sundays). Journey time approx. 70 minutes.

- From London, the North and West: Take M25, then A2, leave motorway at A2/M2 Junction 1 for Gillingham. Follow the brown anchor signs for the Historic Dockyard and Chatham Maritime via the A289 and the Medway Tunnel. Take the first exit directly after emerging from the tunnel, turn right at end of slip road, leading up Maritime Way towards Chatham. The campus entrance is the first exit at the next roundabout, signposted Pembroke and Universities at Medway.

- From the East: Take M2, leave the motorway at Junction 4 for Gillingham. Follow the brown anchor signs for Historic Dockyard and Chatham Maritime via the A278, A2 and A289. Take the last exit just before the Medway Tunnel, signposted Chatham and Historic Dockyard. At the top of slip road, turn left up Maritime Way towards Chatham. The campus entrance is the first exit at the next roundabout, signposted Pembroke and Universities at Medway

Buses:

Canterbury site by bus:
- Canterbury Bus Station to the University. Regular bus service, taking approx. 14 minutes.From Canterbury East follow path on City Walls to Bus Station (clearly visible by City Wall)

From Canterbury West turn right out of station, walk to main road, bus stop is on far side, approx. 50 metres to left.

By foot from Canterbury West:
- Turn right out of the station entrance and walk along Station Road West.
- Turn right into St Dunstan’s Street and continue up St Thomas’s Hill.
- The University is approximately 20 minutes’ walk from Canterbury West Station.

Medway site by bus
- From Chatham train station: Arriva buses 100,140 and 141 leave frequently from the bus stops outside Chatham train station and take approximately 15 minutes to get to the campus. The nearest bus stop to the campus is on Dock Road outside of the campus entrance. This is known as the Chatham Maritime stop or the Compass Centre stop.

Taxis:

Taxis are available at both Canterbury stations.
