Brief history:

The University of Leicester is one of the older universities in the country. Founded in 1921 with nine students, the fledgling college gained full degree-awarding powers in 1957 when it was granted its Royal Charter.
The site for the University was given by a local textile manufacturer, Thomas Fielding Johnson, in order to create a living memorial for those who gave their lives in the First World War. This is reflected in the University motto 'Ut Vitam Habeant' - so that they may have life.

The University was founded as Leicestershire and Rutland College in 1918. The central building, now known as the Fielding Johnson building and housing the University's administration offices and Faculty of Law, dates from 1837 and was formerly the Leicestershire and Rutland Lunatic Asylum.
Students were first admitted to the college in 1921. In 1927, after it became University College, Leicester, students sat the examinations for external degrees of the University of London. In 1957 the college was granted its Royal Charter, and has since then had the status of a University with the right to award its own degrees. The University won the first ever series of University Challenge, in 1963.

- The Venue has seen a £260k facelift in recent times, it now has a capacity of 1600. Plenty of different clubnights and a decent array of live artists.
- Element is the 'modern minamilist' bar on campus. Serves snacks and food during the day and provides a decent area for functions and comedy nights come the evening.
- The Redfearn is the pub on campus, open all day long seven days a week it is the central point for daytime dossing and night time drinking. Quiz nights on offer too.

Volunteering:

The University of Leicester Careers Service has a team dedicated to supporting volunteering in the local community for staff and students. The project is funded by Higher Education Active Community Fund (HEACF) and has seen some 600 students take part. RAG, also very active and organised, aim to raise more moeny than they did the previous year.

Visiting

Rail:

Leicester lies on the London (St. Pancras)-Sheffield, the Birmingham-Nuneaton-Peterborough-Norwich and Stansted, and the Coventry-Nottingham-Lincoln lines.

Leicester Station lies on the University side of the City centre. The University may be reached on foot in 15 minutes, by turning left outside the station, walking up London Road and then along University Road.

Road:

From M1 (South) Junction 21/M69 (North End)
- Follow A563 Outer Ring Leicester South/East for four miles to lights at junction with A50 Northampton road. Turn Left, signposted A5199 City Centre, and follow the Welford Road for 1.4 miles to junction with University Road. In detail note following sequence along Welford Road: two sets of lights; dual-carriageway, with shops and filling stations; traffic lights, followed by playing fields on right. Then turn right at next lights into University Road.

From M1 (North) Junction 22/A50 Burton
- Inward-bound: at busy times drivers are strongly advised to follow the M1 Junction 21 (see above). Otherwise, follow A50 Leicester signs along dual-carriageway towards city centre. Near centre A50 signs now indicate Northammpton. Follow A50 Northampton signs through one-way system. When A50 becomes a two-way road again, follow it uphill across railway and past cemetery on left. Turn left at next lights into University Road. Outward-bound: from the University campus, turn right into University Road. Turn left at first lights into Regent Road. Then follow M1 (North) signs.

From A6 Loughborough
- Entry to Leicester is signalled by short dual-carriageway, `City of Leicester' sign, and large roundabout. Take third exit into narrow 30mph road signposted City Centre A6. Keep straight on for 1 mile until road merges at lights with the A46 Newark road, which now becomes a dual-carriageway. Now read next Route `From A46 Newark'.

From A46 NEWARK
- Follow City Centre signs along dual-carriageway, flanked by many shops, and over the first flyover. Then turn Left at the second flyover, onto Central Ring Road dual-carriageway. Keep straight on at next roundabout, then follow A6 Market Harborough signs through six sets of lights. Continue to follow A6 signs, past Railway Station on left and then turn right at next lights into University Road.

From A47 Peterborough
- Entry to Leicester is signalled by long descent, followed by `City of Leicester' sign, ascent, and 30 mph restriction. Now turn left into Spencefield Lane. Continue for 2.9 miles along this road. In detail note sequence: shops; golf course on left; traffic lights; descent; older shops; traffic lights. Road meets London Road (A6) at next lights. Continue straight acrosss A6 into Granville Road. Then turn left at next lights into University Road.

- From A6 Market Harborough
Follow A6 to junction with Granville Road. In detail note sequence: dual-carriageway starts at entry to Leicester, ends at 30 mph restriction; traffic lights; roundabout followed by park on left. Then filter left at next lights into Granville Road. Turn left again at next lights into University Road.

From A50 Northampton
- Follow A50 to junction with University Road. In detail note sequence: start of first dual-carriageway; end of dual-carriageway; intersection with Outer Ring Road at lights; two more sets of lights; dual-carriageway again, with shops and filling stations; traffic lights, followed by playing fields on right. Then turn RIGHT at next lights into University Road

Buses:

If you arrive by bus or coach at St Margaret's Bus Station, you can take bus number 48 to the stop for the University at the bottom of Mayors Walk on University Road. The fare from the bus station is about £1.20. It will take approximately 40 minutes to walk up to the University from the bus station.

If you arrive by bus or coach at the Train Station you can catch the number 80 bus service which runs from outside of the station to the campus. Buses run approximately every 20 minutes during term time and every hour out of term. The buses go on from the campus to the University's Halls of Residence at Oadby.

Taxis:

There is a taxi rank at the bus station. You may wish to take a taxi to the Charles Wilson Building, at the top of Mayors Walk, at around £5.00.
