Brief history:

Two of the University's founding colleges, Anglican St. Katharine's (1844) and Catholic Notre Dame (1856) were established in the 19th century. They were supplemented on Merseyside when a second Catholic teacher education College, Christ's College, on a site adjacent to St. Katharine's, admitted its first students in 1965.

In 1980 these three Colleges joined in an ecumenical federation under the holding title of Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (LIHE). Archbishop Derek Worlock and Bishop David Sheppard wrote of this as being "a sign of hope". In 1995 a new Instrument and Articles of Government established a single, unified, ecumenical College, and a new name - Liverpool Hope - which better reflected its role and Mission.

LIHE's name was changed to Liverpool Hope University College and achieved taught degree awarding powers in 1996.

Travel into the city/town of:

Liverpool John Lennon Airport is about four miles from Hope Park and Manchester Airport is under an hour away either by road or rail. Liverpool has a coach station which offers connections throughout the country. Five motorways fringe the city (M53, M56, M57, M58 and the M62 which joins the M6). Hope Park is only a few minutes’ drive from the start of the M62.

Rail:

The Merseyrail network links Liverpool to the Wirral, Cheshire and Lancashire and Lime St Station is a major terminus for the west coast and trans-Pennine rail networks. Hourly trains only take two hours and forty-five minutes to travel between Liverpool and London Euston.

Road:

Finding Hope Park
- From Motorway M62
At the end of the M62 Motorway (Junction 4) take the left feeder lane by The Rocket public house onto the A5058 Queens Drive (signposted Ring Road, Widnes, Liverpool Airport). Keep on this road until the Childwall Five Ways roundabout, take the third exit (straight on). Continue along Queens Drive to the second set of traffic lights. Turn left onto Woolton Road (signposted Woolton), continue to the next set of traffic lights, turn left on to Taggart Avenue into

Hope Park.
- From Motorway M56
Leave the motorway at Junction 12 (A557). Follow signs to Widnes, Runcorn and Liverpool Airport (A557) for about three miles. At the junction with A533 branch left to go over Runcorn Bridge. Move into right hand lane on Bridge and follow signs for Liverpool (A562). Stay on main road to Liverpool (which becomes A561) until set of traffic lights (pass Jaguar Factory on right-hand side). Turn right at traffic lights (signposted Hough Green). Follow Woodend Avenue until next set of traffic lights. Turn left and drive along this road for approx ¼ mile turning right at the next set of traffic lights. Follow this road (Hillfoot Road which becomes Menlove Avenue) through two sets of traffic lights. At third set of traffic lights, turn right into Cromptons Lane, through another set of traffic lights on to Taggart Avenue into Hope Park.

- From the Wirral
Wallasey Mersey Tunnel (Kingsway) Toll payable - car £1.30. At Tunnel exit there are options to go left or straight ahead - proceed straight ahead, this exit leads to Scotland Road/Bryom Street. Keep in left hand lane and pass the Liverpool John Moores University building on the left. At traffic lights follow the road up to the left (signposted Warrington, Manchester and M62) on to Islington, move into right hand lane, to the second set of traffic lights.
Proceed straight ahead on to Brunswick Road and follow road round to the right on to Low Hill. At traffic lights carry straight on (B5340, Hall Lane) but move into left hand lane. At next lights, turn left on to A5047 Edge Lane, carry straight on for approx 2 miles. After the junction with Rathbone Road, the road becomes the A5080 Edge Lane Drive which leads to a major junction at the end of M62. Approaching this junction move into right hand lane to follow road round to the right on to A5058 Queens Drive. Keep on this road until the Childwall Five Ways roundabout, take the third exit (straight on). Continue along Queens Drive to the second set of traffic lights. Turn left onto Woolton Road (signposted Woolton), continue down this road until you reach the next main set of traffic lights, turn left onto Taggart Avenue into Hope Park.

Finding Hope at Everton
- From Motorway M62
At the end of the motorway select exit route which is straight ahead (signposted A5080 City Centre Birkenhead, Wallasey [Tunnels]) follow Edge Lane Drive and on to Edge Lane (A5047), continue on until you see a sign (indicating left for Universities, Royal Liverpool Hospital Parking and Cathedrals. Go left and then right on to (A5047) Irvine Street which leads in to Pembroke Place. Go right at traffic lights in to Anson Street and then right again on to London Road and move to left hand lane. Turn left on to Moss Street. At the next lights go straight ahead on to Shaw Street, Hope at Everton is approx 100 yards along on left-hand side.
From Motorway M56
Leave M56 at Junction 15 and join M53 and continue to Liverpool via Wallasey Mersey Tunnel. Follow directions below from the Wirral.

From the Wirral
- Wallasey Mersey Tunnel (Kingsway) Toll payable - car £1.20. At Tunnel exit there are options to go left or straight ahead - proceed straight ahead this exit leads to Scotland Road/Bryom Street. Keep in left-hand lane and at the traffic lights in front of the Liverpool John Moores University building (which is on the left), follow to the left (signposted Warrington, Manchester and M62) on to Islington, stay in left-hand lane to the second set of traffic lights. Turn left on to Shaw Street, Hope at Everton is approx 100 yards along on left-hand side.

Finding Aigburth Park
- From Motorway M62
At the end of the M62 Motorway take the left feeder lane by The Rocket public house onto the A5058 Queens Drive (signposted Ring Road, Widnes, Liverpool Airport). Continue along Queens Drive, almost to the end, (you will see Sefton Park ahead of you) then turn left onto Aigburth Vale (signposted for Mossley Hill Hospital). Continue along Aigburth Vale, bearing right onto Victoria Road and straight across the junction into Ashfield Road. At the lights turn right onto A561 Aigburth Road. After 3/4 mile turn left into St Michael's Road (Somerfield supermarket on the corner) signposted for St Michael's Station. Aigburth Park Halls of residence are at the bottom of St Michael's Road on the left. Please ring the buzzer on the gate entry system for admission.

From Motorway M56
- Leave the motorway at Junction 12 (A557). Follow signs for Widnes, Runcorn and Liverpool Airport (A557) for about 3 miles. At the junction with A533 branch left to go over Runcorn Bridge. Move into right hand lane on Bridge and follow signs for Liverpool (A562). Stay on main road to Liverpool (which becomes A533) until road forks, go to the left on to A561 (Speke Boulevard which becomes Speke Road, then Garston Way, St Mary’s Road and then Aigburth Road). At junction (signposted left for St Michael’s Station) turn left on to St Michael’s Road, Aigburth Park Halls of Residence are at the end of the road on left.

From the Wirral
- Wallasey Mersey Tunnel (Kingsway) Toll payable - car £1.20. At Tunnel exit there are options to go left or straight ahead - proceed straight ahead this exit leads to Scotland Road/Bryom Street. With Liverpool John Moores University building on the left, move over to right-hand lane and turn right on to (A5053) Leeds Street which bends round to the left and becomes King Edward Street (A5052) and then becomes New Quay (A5036). Continue on through The Strand, Wapping and Chaloner Street. At the end of Chaloner Street, take left-hand fork on to Parliament Street and move in to right-hand lane.

- At junction go right on to A561 (St James Place, which leads in to Park Place and then on to Park Road). Keep following A561 (signposted Widnes, Speke, Liverpool Airport, Garston, Aigburth) on to Aigburth Road. Pass a petrol station on the left and then at the pedestrian crossing move in to the right-hand lane. At the next set of lights, turn right in to Chetwynd Street, then first left in to Bryanston Road then right in to St Michael’s Road; Aigburth Park Halls of Residence are at the end of the road on left.
