Accommodation & Surrounding Areas:
Making your choice
Does LJMU guarantee accommodation to all new students?
Yes - for academic year 2007/08 LJMU can guarantee a room in high quality city-centre accommodation to all new students, regardless of what course they are doing or when they apply. Most of the rooms we have private en-suite bathrooms, although those if flats with shared bathrooms can be much cheaper. We cannot give an absolute guarantee of a room in a specific location to every applicant because some locations will inevitably be full before the start of the academic year. Therefore if you have a preference it is important to let us know by submitting your request using our accommodation request form as soon as possible. It is worth noting however that in 2006/07 over 90% of new students were offered a room in their first choice accommodation.
Does LJMU offer any catered accommodation?
No - there is no catered accommodation at LJMU but all our accommodation is located with easy access of food outlets and shops.
Is there specific accommodation for students on particular courses or who will be studying in specific teaching buildings?
No - students are free to live where they wish but most students choose to live as close as possible to where their course is taught. The map on pages 14 and 15 of the new Accommodation Guide show where the accommodation is located relative to our main teaching buildings. If you require any further advice, please contact the Accommodation Office or consult this section of the LJMU website.
Who will I live with in my first year at LJMU?
If you make your application via the Accommodation Office, you will share your flat only with other new LJMU students. Flats which have shared bathroom facilities usually contain students of the same gender whereas en-suite flats may be mixed. If you choose accommodation close to the building in which your course is taught then it is highly likely that you will be sharing with other students on similar courses. If you know you definitely want to live in certain type of flat, please indicate this when you complete the online form and we will do our best to meet your needs.
Can I live with my friend or friends?
Yes - if you wish to share your flat with a specific person or people who will also be a new LJMU student in 2007/08, please indicate this when you complete the online form, make sure that your friend(s) does the same. If possible you should complete the forms at the same time to ensure that your request is captured. However please note that you cannot usually share a flat with a student from another university or a students who is already at LJMU.
Can I bring my pet (dog/cat/fish/snake/hamster/rat/gerbil/mongoose/aardvark etc etc) with me to Liverpool?
No - animals are not permitted in any of the student accommodation offered to new LJMU students.
Can I visit any of the accommodation sites before I make my choice?
If you visit LJMU on an Discovery Day (pre-application) or an Experience Day (post-application) you will be shown an example of a typical study bedroom. Unfortunately due to the number of students who enter LJMU every year, the Accommodation Office cannot arrange individual visits but you are free to contact the accommodation directly to make your own arrangements. The Accommodation Office can give you have contact details for any of the sites listed in the Accommodation Guide and will be able to advise you on likely availability of visits.
I am coming to LJMU to take a "non-standard" course, where should I live?
Some students such as those on Teaching and Nursing courses have different requirements from ordinary undergraduate students – including different start and finish dates and different examination timetables. Where possible the Accommodation Office groups such students together, unless they specifically request to live with students on different courses. Many Nursing students choose to live in Marybone 3 because this location offers easy access to the Learning Resource Centre and also offers flexibility over contract start and end dates. Many PGCE students will be based at Rose Lane in 2007/08, close to the I.M.Marsh Campus, for the same reason.
I will be on holiday or travelling during the summer - how do I secure my accommodation?
You will be able to secure your accommodation in most cases if someone is able to send in a deposit on your behalf and explain the reasons why you are not able to sign the tenancy agreement. You will need to sign your agreement as soon as possible upon your return.
How do I request accommodation at LJMU for September 2007?
New students can request accommodation by calling the Accommodation Office on 0151 231 3093.
Does LJMU only reserve rooms for students with unconditional offers?
No - as long as you make LJMU your first choice university, the Accommodation Office will process your request and pass your details to your first choice accommodation which has rooms available, even if you have a conditional offer.
What do I need to do to secure my booking?
In order to secure your room, all students must pay a £250 deposit and sign a tenancy agreement. If you have a conditional offer from LJMU and do not subsequently get the required grades to study here, your deposit will be refunded and the agreement will be cancelled.
Will I need a guarantor and who should that be?
All students must provide details of someone who is prepared to act as their guarantor in the event that their rent is not paid, unless they are intending to pay the full year's rent before they arrive at LJMU. This is usually a parent or guardian but can be a sibling or a family friend instead. Whoever takes on this role will be asked to confirm that he or she understands the obligations of being a guarantor before they are accepted. Students from outside the UK who cannot provide a UK-based guarantor will need to pay the full year's rent in advance to confirm their booking.
I intend to make LJMU my Insurance choice university, can I still request accommodation?
Yes - but we will only process your request if you have firmly accepted an offer and hence selected LJMU as your first choice university. If you are holding an offer from us as insurance, you can still complete the request form but this will not be processed until LJMU becomes your first choice. If you inform us that you intend to accept a firm offer from LJMU and pay a deposit to secure a room but subsequently decide to make us your insurance university, you will not be entitled to a refund of the deposit.
I will be on holiday or travelling during the summer - how do I secure my accommodation?
In order to secure your accommodation, either you or someone you trust should send in your accommodation request using the online form as normal. Your chosen accommodation will send a tenancy agreement to your home address and if you are not able to sign it at this stage, it is important that someone lets them know so that they hold the room for you. They may ask someone to pay the deposit on your behalf or they may wait for this until you return home, depending on their own policy and the likely time that you will be away. Either way, you will need to sign the agreement as soon as possible upon your return and pay a deposit if this has not already been done.
Money matters
How do I pay my rent?
If you are able to pay your rent in full in advance or on arrival in Liverpool, many accommodation providers will offer you a discount on the annual cost - please consult pages 30 and 31 of the Accommodation Guide to see whether your preferred choice does this or not. All the accommodation offered to new LJMU students in 2007/08 will allow home (UK-based) students to pay their rent in three instalments, which are timed to coincide with receipt of Student Loan Company payments. Students from outside the UK will be required to pay in full and in advance, unless can provide details of a UK-based guarantor.
Are utility bills included in the rental charges?
Yes, in academic year 2007/08 all the accommodation offered by LJMU to new students features all-inclusive rents and so there will be no additional charges for heating or lighting.
Will I need a TV license?
Any student with a personal TV will require a license and in addition a separate license is required for any TV in a communal area. Some providers supply a license for a TV in the communal area and you should double-check this before you arrive.
The TV Licensing Authority makes periodic checks and Licensing Officers are authorised to enter your accommodation for the purposes of making enquiries - more information can be found on this website.
Will I be liable for Council Tax?
Full-time students living in private accommodation with other students are fully exempt from Council Tax.
Will I need insurance for my possessions?
All the accommodation in the new Accommodation Guide has basic insurance cover included within the weekly rent - please consult pages 30 and 31 of the Guide to see whether your preferred choice does or not. It is advisable to check your tenancy agreement before arriving in Liverpool to ensure that you are covered and also to check the policy provides sufficient cover if you have any unusual or valuable items.
What do I need to bring with me?
You will need to bring your personal bedding (sheet, pillows and pillow cases, blankets or duvet). Most shared kitchens do not contain crockery or cutlery, but it is advisable to bring the bare minimum with you at first (e.g. plate, mug, bowl, knife, fork and spoon). On arrival you will be able to decide with your new flatmates what items are required and then purchase them communally. Irons and ironing boards are usually provided in the on-site launderettes.
When should I arrive in Liverpool?
Accommodation contracts for new LJMU students commence on Saturday, 8 September 2007 (for most locations) or on Thursday, 13 September 2007 (for Marybone 1 and 2 only). You are free to move in to your accommodation from the first day of the contract.
Enrolment at LJMU for academic year 2007/08 will take place over a three day period from Friday, 14 to Sunday, 17 September 2007 and detailed instructions on your enrolment 'slot' will be sent to you nearer this date. It is recommended that you do not arrive in Liverpool too far ahead of the start of teaching and if possible you should arrive in Liverpool on the day before your allocated enrolment slot.
Please note that International students (from outside the EU) should aim to arrive in Liverpool by Sunday, 9 September in order to take part in their orientation programme. All enquiries about this programme should be addressed to the LJMU International Office.
MORE INFORMATION ON THIS SUBJECT CAN NOW BE FOUND IN THIS SECTION OF THE WEBSITE.
Can I have friends to stay with me?
The majority of accommodation will allow a friend to stay with you in your flat for one or two nights. You should check your tenancy agreement as this will outline the rules in this area. Remember that if your friend causes any damage or disruption while staying with you, then you may be held liable for it. It is also important to take account of your flatmates when inviting friends to stay.
If I have a problem with my accommodation, who can I contact?
You should always contact the accommodation manager in the first instance as they are best placed to rectify any problems.
Who do I talk to if I feel lonely?
LJMU Senior Students will operate in all the accommodation offered to new students in 2007/08 and they will be able to help with many of the problems you may encounter. In addition to this LJMU has a number of support services such as Student Welfare and Counselling, who provide a confidential service if you need to talk to someone about any problems you have. Liverpool Students Union also provides a number of clubs and societies, which you can join to meet people with similar interests.
Can I stay in the accommodation after my first year?
Most of the accommodation offered to new students also have rooms for second and third year students and (subject to availability) you can stay on for longer than one year if you wish. However because LJMU requires a certain number of rooms to be reserved for each year's intake, you may not be able to secure the same bedroom in future years. It is not usually possible to stay on at Apollo Court or Barkhill Court after your first year because both sites are currently reserved for new students.
Ten common myths about accommodation
The way that LJMU provides accommodation to its new students is different from most universities. This section of the website lists 10 common myths or misconceptions that students and parents sometimes have about accommodation and also demonstrates the reality at LJMU in every case.
Myth 1. LJMU will allocate me a bedroom of their choice
Reality: New students choose their own accommodation and every year over 90% will get their first choice location with those who apply earlier getting the best choice
Myth 2. I will live in an old-fashioned "Hall of Residence" and have to pay for meals that I don't want
Reality: All accommodation at LJMU consists of single study bedrooms - and it is all self-catering
Myth 3: I will have to share a bathroom with people I don't know
Reality: Most bedrooms feature en-suite private bathrooms and the vast majority of students can have one if they want it
Myth 4: I will share a flat with 2nd and 3rd year students or students from other universities
Reality: New LJMU students only share their accommodation with other new LJMU students - but you can ask to live with a friend or friends if you wish
Myth 5: I will have to move my belongings out of my bedroom at Christmas and at Easter
Reality: At LJMU, your room is your room from the day that you move in until the end of the contract - so you don't have to remove anything until the last day if you wish
Myth 6: I will have to catch a bus to my lectures every morning
Reality: All LJMU's accommodation is situated within easy walking distance of the main teaching buildings
Myth 7: I have to wait until I get my exam results to apply for accommodation
Reality: LJMU will allocate accommodation to all students who make us their first choice university, including all those who have been made a conditional offer. More information about requesting accommodation for September 2007 can be found on this page.
Myth 8: I will have to pay all my rent as soon as I arrive in Liverpool
Reality: All LJMU students can opt to pay their rent in three equal instalments, and these coincide with the receipt of money from the Student Loan Company (which also comes in three instalments)
Myth 9: When I get to my accommodation, I will be left by myself to cope
Reality: LJMU staff called Senior Students are located in all the accommodation we offer to give new students support and advice when they require it
Myth 10: I will be kicked out of the accommodation after my first year and I will have to move into a dirty and run-down student house
Reality: If you like where you live, you can stay on for later years in almost every case - the only exceptions at present are Barkhill Court and Apollo Court
Facilities
The standard of student accommodation offered by LJMU is amongst the highest in the United Kingdom, with an en-suite bathroom guaranteed to all who request one.
All the accommodation offered to new LJMU students for academic year 2007/08 is self-catering and consists of flats containing between 4 and 6 study bedrooms with a shared communal kitchen and living area. In addition there are a small number of self-contained studio apartments available at Apollo Court - these cost £99.50 per week but are only suitable for mature students and/or those who have lived away from home before.
Most bedrooms offered to new students are fully en-suite and hence feature a private toilet, sink and shower. It is worth noting however that bedrooms in flats with shared bathrooms are significantly cheaper than en-suite rooms and should be given careful consideration by students who are looking to save money.
Security at all of the accommodation offered to new students is excellent, with CCTV systems and 24 hour staffing of reception areas now standard across the city.
All bedrooms offer an optional Broadband connection - this cost is included within the rent at Barkhill Court, Marybone 1 and Great Newton Hall and prices elsewhere vary from £75 to £319 depending on the location and the type of connection. Individual phone lines are also available in many bedrooms and several accommodation choices offer Digital TV services within flats. Further information on the technical aspects of these services are available on request from your chosen accommodation provider.
Pages 30 and 31 of the new Accommodation Guide offer a summary of the facilities available to new students for 2007/08 and further information is available on this website for individual locations.
Price
A recent survey by the National Union of Students demonstrated that Liverpool has the cheapest student accommodation of any comparable major English city.
As a guide, weekly rents for the main types of accommodation available to new LJMU students in academic year 2007/08 are as follows:
· City centre bedrooms with shared bathroom: £59.99 to £69.00
· City centre bedrooms with private en-suite bathroom: £64.95 to £89.00
· Bedrooms at I.M.Marsh Campus with shared bathroom: £61.00 to £70.00
· Bedrooms in private shared house or flat: £40.00 to £70.00 (*)
(*) If you are interested in renting a room in a private house or flat, you should contact Liverpool Student Homes in the first instance. This option is not advised for students who are new to the city or who have not lived away from home before.
It is important to remember that standard contract lengths vary from 36 to 42 weeks, which can make a significant difference to the total annual cost of accommodation. Even the shortest contract of 36 weeks is long enough to cover the length of all undergraduate programmes at LJMU.
It is also worth noting that some of the accommodation available offer a prompt payment discount to those students who are able to pay their annual rent in full and in advance of arriving in Liverpool. Pages 30 and 31 of the new Accommodation Guide has more information on both these issues.
