Brief history:

LSE was founded in 1895. The decision to create the School was made by four Fabians at a breakfast party at Borough Farm, near Milford, Surrey, on 4 August 1894. The four were Beatrice and Sidney Webb, Graham Wallas and George Bernard Shaw.

The aim of the School was the betterment of society. By studying poverty issues and analysing inequalities, the Webbs sought to improve society in general. Sidney Webb in particular, noted Beatrice in her diaries, had a vision of 'a centre not only of lectures on special subjects but an association of students who would be directed and supported in doing original work.'

- At LSE the price of the accommodation is set mostly by the location. High Holburn Hall, for example, is located in a swanky part of Covent Garden and a single en suite room can cost a cool £157 per week.
- Those that aren't closeby, like Sidney Webb House and Butlers Wharf, can take a 45 minute commute to reach campus. The majority of the other halls take at least 20 minutes to reach campus. Travelling with a hangover is not advised.

Transport:

LSE is well situated in Westminster, between Covent Garden, Aldwych and Temple Bar, bordering the City of London. It resides adjacent to the Royal Courts of Justice and Kingsway. The nearest London Underground stations to the campus are Temple, Covent Garden and Holborn, with Aldwych having closed in the 1980s. Buses to Aldwych will stop outside the college.

Fees and bursaries:

Undergraduate fees
- All courses set at approximately £3150.

Bursaries
- LSE Bursary; maximum LSE Bursary of £2,500 per year is awarded to those students with the lowest residual income.
- LSE Discretionary Bursary; available to students who face exceptional financial needs such as caring responsibilities, financial need related to disability or an unavoidable requirement to live at home.
- LSE Accommodation Award; Up to £1000 to help support London students to live away from home whose domestic environment is ill suited to study purposes and whose academic performance could be enhanced by being offered additional financial support to contribute to the costs of living away from home.

Scholarships

- Stelios scholarships; 4 £5,000 per annum awards are available for UK students applying for business subjects at LSE.

Road:

- There are only a few parking meters around the LSE campus, mainly near Lincoln's Inn Fields. The closest NCP parking is on Parker St off Drury Lane. LSE is located within London's congestion charging zone. See London

- The Blue Badge scheme is the main scheme in Britain which provides special parking rights for vehicles carrying drivers or passengers with disabilities.

- Near LSE, the facilities for Blue Badge holders in Camden are very poor - the spaces in Lincoln's Inn, for example, are only available to holders of Camden's Green Badge.

- The facilities for Blue Badge holders in Westminster are pretty good - there are seven dedicated parking bays within reasonable walking distance: one in Portugal Street (often full); one in Sheffield Street (new, apparently rarely used); three in Surrey Street (rarely all full); two in Temple Place (also rarely both full).

- In Westminster a Blue Badge holder is allowed to park for one extra hour at a parking meter or in a pay-and-display zone. The Blue Badge map for central London is on the London Councils website.

Buses:

Buses that stop on or near the Aldwych are:
- Numbers: 1, 4, 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23, 26, 59, 68, X68, 76, 77a, 91, 139, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 243, 341 and 521.

Underground:

- Holborn (Piccadilly and Central lines) - on the corner of Kingsway and High Holborn. Approximately a five minute walk

- Temple (District and Circle lines) - on the Embankment at the bottom of Arundel Street. Approximately a five minute walk

- Charing Cross (Jubilee, Northern and Bakerloo lines) - on the Strand at the Trafalgar Square end. Approximately a ten minute walk
British Rail stations

- Waterloo - other side of the River from the Strand over Waterloo Bridge. Approximately a 10-15 minutes walk. Trains mainly to south London and south east England

- Charing Cross - on the Strand at the Trafalgar Square end. Approximately a ten minute walk. Trains mainly to south London and south east England

- Blackfriars - on the Embankment near Blackfriars Bridge. Approximately 10 -15 minutes walk. Trains mainly to south London and south east England but also the First Capital Connect line through north London
