Brief history:

Opening as the Borough Polytechnic Institute in 1892, with a remit to educate the local community in a range of practical skills, it became the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1971. Then in 1989 changed again to South Bank Polytechnic, becoming one of the Conservative government's new universities in 1992 calling itself South Bank University. In 2003, it made one final change to become London South Bank University.

The Chancellor is the newscaster Sir Trevor McDonald and the Vice-Chancellor is the historian Professor Deian Hopkin.

Fees and bursaries:

Undergraduate fees
- All courses set at £3070.

Bursary
- LSBU Annual Bursary; £2250 award available for students paying the tuition fee or taking out a Tuition Fee Loan from the Student Loan Company to pay the tuition fee. Year 1 students will receive £500, year 2 £750 and in year 3 £750 plus a graduation bonus of £250.

Foyer Bursary; The Foyer Federation is a Registered Charity working with disadvantaged young people, who are homeless or in housing need, providing them with holistic support and affordable accommodation. Foyer students receive a bursary of £1000 for every year of their course including a placement (sandwich) year.

Scholarships
- Lawrence Burrow Scholarship; 10 £1000 awards for Asian or West Indian students every year based on academic merit and other factors.

Sports Scholarships; £3000 award and sporting support for elite athletes.

Visiting

Rail:

LSBU
- The closest mainline stations are Waterloo, London Bridge and Elephant & Castle and they are all within walkable distance.

Havering
- Trains from London (Liverpool Street Station - Platforms 15 - 19) take approximately 30 minutes to Harold Wood Station. Trains from Stratford take 20 minutes. LSBU at Havering is diagonally opposite the station. Please allow 10 minutes in the hospital grounds to find the college.

Whipps Cross
- Trains to Wood Street run regularly on the London Liverpool Street to Chingford line via Walthamstow Central. LSBU at Whipps Cross is just under 1 mile to the east of Wood Street Station.

Buses:

LSBU
- Numbers 1, 12, 35, 40, 45, 53, 63, 68, 100, 133, 148, 155, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, 196, 333, 344, 360, 363, 453, 468, C10 and P5.

Havering
- The 256, 296 and 294 buses all stop at Harold Wood Mainline Station.

Whipps Cross
- The following all stop in LSBU at Whipps Cross (Whipps Cross Hospital Grounds) or roundabout: W12 - Wanstead to Walthamstow South Grove via South Woodford; W15 - Hackney to Walthamstow Central via Leytonstone tube; 20 - Debden to Walthamstow Central via Woodford; 97 - Chingford to Leyton; 230 - Leytonstone Green Man to Wood Green via Bakers Arms; 257 - Straford to Walthamstow Central .

Underground:

LSBU
- Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines are all within a 10 minutes' walk.

Havering
- LSBU at Havering is not situated near a tube station. Change at Straford (Central Line) to mainline railways.

Whipps Cross
- Leytonstone is on the Central Line near Whipps Cross Hospital.
