Brief history:

The University can trace its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery (later the College of Medicine), established in Newcastle in 1834, and to Armstrong College, which was founded in the city in 1871 for the teaching of physical sciences.

These two colleges formed one division of the federal University of Durham, the Durham Colleges forming the other division. The Newcastle Colleges merged to form King's College in 1937 and, in 1963, when the federal University was dissolved, King's College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Sustained expansion since 1945 has resulted in the development of a modern University campus, around the original Armstrong College buildings, on a 45-acre site close to the centre of Newcastle.

Location
- Set in extensive grounds, three miles east of the city centre, Henderson Hall requires a bus into the city.
- Castle Leazes is within walking distance of the main campus, whilst Bowsden Court is situated two miles' north of the main University campus near to a Metro link.
- Magnet Court is situated close to St James' Park Football Stadium, Eldon Square Shopping Centre and the University campus.
- St Mary's is set in attractive grounds at the heart of a local community. It's about one mile west of Richardson Road, served by several buses and shops. Richardson Road, with its student village atmosphere and location is a few minutes walk from the majority of academic schools, the city centre and local shops.

- The Newcatle University Bursary Scheme; For undergraduates who commenced study in 2007/08 with parental residual income as calculated by the LEA

- Elite Athletes Squad and Sports Bursaries; Elite athletes are issued with a contract, sports kit, diaries, and an annual lecture programme. They also receive full medical and physiotherapy screening and full support from a team of personal tutors providing sports science suppport, fitness assessments, personal training programmes and pastoral support.

- Northern Electric Bursary; 2 £1000 awards (plus £500 in subsequent years of study) for students from the County of Northumberland in the UK. Students can be from any course or discipline but must be in receipt of Government or LEA support.

- Pybus Fund Bursary; 2 £1000 awards (plus £500 in subsequent years of study) for female students over 21 when they begin their degree and are in financial need.

Visiting

Rail:

Newcastle Central Station is situated on Britain’s east coast main line linking England and Scotland, and is directly accessible from London King's Cross, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The journey from London King's Cross can be expected to take between three and four hours. Tickets usually cost between £50 and £100, though cheaper ones are often available if booked in advance.

Coach:

Newcastle Coach Station is the main coach station for long distance journeys, and most intercity coaches terminate or drop off here. It is located near Central Station, which has a busy taxi rank, and also a Metro station. You can take a Metro to the Haymarket (two stops) which is adjacent to the University. Alternatively, it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk to the University campus.
The other main coach and bus depots are at Haymarket (near the Metro Station), and under Eldon Square (off Percy Street, near the Eldon Gardens shopping centre). These cater mostly for journeys within the North East.

Road:

From the north or south, follow the A1 towards Newcastle. This takes you around the west side of the city. Whether you are travelling from the north or south, you should leave the A1 at the junction with the A167/A696 and follow the signs for the 'City Centre'. If you are travelling directly to the University, take the A167 exit marked "Universities and Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and Eldon Square" (B1318, City North) which brings you on to Claremont Road, and the University Entrance.

From the west, follow the A69 to the junction with the A1 and travel northbound. Leave the A1 at the next junction (City West, Westerhope, B6324) and follow the signs for City Centre A167. Leave at the exit marked "Universities, Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and Eldon Square" (B1318, City North) and turn left at the mini-roundabout. This takes you on to Claremont Road, and the University Entrance.

If you are heading to Jesmond or Osborrne Road, (good for hotels) you should take the A1058 exit from the A167(M).

Underground:

A Metro station is also located in the Central Station. The nearest Metro station to the University campus is Haymarket. Metros are also available from here which go:

- North to Monument, Haymarket, Jesmond, West Jesmond, Ilford Road, Gosforth and then on to either the Coast or Airport.
- South to Gateshead, Felling, Heworth, Pelaw and then on to South Shields and Sunderland.
Change at Monument to go west to St James, or east to Manors, Byker, Chillingham Road, Walkergate, Wallsend and on to the Coast.

Taxis:

On arrival in Newcastle Central Station, taxis are usually available immediately outside (though there can sometimes be a queue). Taxis from Central Station to the University campus, or nearby areas such as Jesmond and Osborne Road (good for hotels), or Castle Leazes (halls of residence) should cost around £5-£6.
