Brief history:

In 1924, Northampton Technical College was opened at St George's Avenue, site of the current Avenue Campus. The building for the college was formerly opened by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1932. A School of Art opened later in 1937.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Northamptonshire was one of the few counties in England to lack a teacher training college. A teacher training college in Liverpool lost its home, and was transferred to what is now the Park Campus of The University of Northampton. The education college was opened by the then Secretary of State for Education and Science, Margaret Thatcher, in 1972.

In 1975, this teacher training college amalgamated with the college of technology to become Nene College, a College of Higher Education, taking its name from the River Nene in Northamptonshire. This later became known as Nene-University College Northampton. In 1993, the College incorporated St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy and was granted taught degree awarding powers. In 1994 it took in the Leathersellers College and in 1997 the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery. It became University College Northampton in 1999 and the University of Northampton in 2005.

National coach services stop at Greyfriars Bus Station in the centre of the Town.

Road:

Park Campus

From the North
- Leave M1 at junction 16 and head east on the A45. Keep straight on through the small roundabout and traffic lights.
- At the large roundabout take the left lane and first exit.
- Follow signs for Kingsthorpe and continue straight over at roundabouts and traffic lights until you reach the Cock Hotel junction.
- Turn left at the junction and move into the right hand lane.
- Continue forward past the shops, move to the right hand lane and follow signs for the University’s Park Campus. Turn right onto Boughton Green Road. The entrance to the Visitors Car Park is on the right at the top of the hill.

From the South
- Leave the M1 at junction 15 and turn right onto the A508 Northampton.
- This leads into the A45 Nene Valley Way. Leave at the junction A43 Kettering. Turn left onto the A43 Lumbertubs Way and go straight over at the first roundabout.
- At the second roundabout take the second exit onto Moulton Park and follow signs for the University’s Park Campus.
- Take the second exit at the roundabout. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Boughton Green Road.
- The entrance to the Visitors Car Park is on the left at the top of the hill.

From the East
- From the A14 turn onto the A43 Northampton and follow signs to Moulton.Continue on the A43 and at the large roundabout take the fifth exit onto Moulton Park and follow signs for University’s Park Campus.
- At the roundabout take the second exit and follow signs for the University’s Park Campus.
- At the second roundabout take the second exit onto Boughton Green Road.
- The entrance to the visitors’ car park is on the left at the

Avenue Campus

From the North or South
- Leave the M1 at junction 15 and follow signs for A508 Town Centre and Market Harborough.
- Once through the Town Centre you will see a Royal Mail sorting office on your left.
- Shortly after this you come to a set of traffic lights adjacent to the Cathedral.
- Turn right into St George’s Avenue and Avenue Campus is a 1/4 mile on the left.

From the East
- From the A14, turn onto A43 towards Northampton and follow signs to Moulton.
- Continue on the A43 and at the large roundabout take the fifth exit to Moulton Park and follow signs for the University’s Park Campus.
- From Park Campus continue along Boughton Green Road to the T-junction and turn left into Kingsthorpe.
- At the Cock Hotel junction go straight across, at the fifth set of traffic lights turn left in St George’s Avenue.
- The entrance to Avenue Campus is about 1/4 mile on the left.

Buses:

Buses are available from Greyfriars bus station in the town centre - ten minutes walk from the railway station.
- For Park Campus - Number 21 (MK service) and 4A, ask for Boughton Green Road.
- For Avenue Campus - Number 21 (MK service) and 4A, ask for St George’s Avenue.

Taxis:

Taxis are available at the train station, bus station and the town centre.
