Brief history:

Robert Gordon, born 1668 in Aberdeen, was the only son of Arthur Gordon, an Edinburgh advocate. When his father died in 1680, Robert Gordon inherited over £1000 - a substantial sum for a twelve year old. Four years later he was elected a Burgess of Guild, which enabled him to trade as a merchant in the city. After graduating from Marischal College in 1689, he set off for the Continent from the family home near the Castlegate. He travelled extensively before establishing a business as a merchant trader in Danzig in the Baltic.

In 1720 Robert Gordon retired to Aberdeen. He had amassed a considerable fortune yet he is believed to have had a 'frugal' retirement. On his death 11 years later he willed his entire estate to build a residential school for educating young boys. In the summer of 1750 the Robert Gordon's Hospital was born. From then there were many changes and mergers with member colleges until in 1992, when the instituition was awarded university status and the first Chancellor, Sir Bob Reid, was installed.

Visiting

Rail:

There are regular direct trains to and from London, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The services to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh link with most other mainline stations in the UK.

By Train/Bus
- The train and bus station are located on Guild Street, by the harbour.
- The quickest way to get to the City Centre campus is to head up Guild Street.
- Cross the road and enter the Trinity Shopping Centre.
- Walk through the centre and exit at Union Street.
- Cross Union Street at the traffic lights by the cobbled Belmont Street.
- Walk straight up Belmont Street and you will come to Schoolhill and The Robert Gordon
University.

Road:

RGU has two campuses - one in the City Centre and one on the south side of the city at Garthdee. The City Centre campus is only a 10 minute walk from the harbour area where the train, bus and ferry terminals are located. Even if you are heading only to the Garthdee campus, it would be best if you make your way to the City Centre campus first to catch the free Shuttle Bus to Garthdee.

There is no access to the City Centre or Garthdee campus car parks.

Getting to the City Centre Campus

If you are travelling from North of Aberdeen
From A956
- If you are entering Aberdeen from the A956 continue along King Street until you come to the traffic lights by the Mercedes garage.
- Turn right up Mounthooly Way until you come to Mounthooly roundabout.
- At the roundabout take the 2nd exit.
- Continue through the first set of pedestrian crossing traffic lights and past Aberdeen College on your right hand side.
- Go straight ahead at the 2nd set of traffic lights.
- At the next set of traffic lights turn right onto Upperkirkgate which becomes Schoolhill.
- The City Centre campus is located on the right hand side, just after Boots and the Students’ Union, and next to the Art Gallery. Directly opposite is The Academy shopping centre.

From A96
- If you are travelling on the A96 at the Haudigan roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Great Northern Road.
- At the next roundabout continue along Great Northern Road by taking the 3rd exit.
- Great Northern Road becomes Powis Terrace, then Powis Place and then Causewayend.
- At the bottom of Causewayend take the 3rd exit at the Mounthooly roundabout.
- Continue through the first set of pedestrian crossing traffic lights and past Aberdeen College on your right hand side.
- Go straight ahead at the 2nd set of traffic lights.
- At the next set of traffic lights turn right onto Upperkirkgate which becomes Schoolhill.
- The City Centre campus is located on the right hand side, just after Boots and the Student’s Union on the right hand side, and is opposite the Academy shopping centre.

If you are travelling from South of Aberdeen
- As you are entering Aberdeen from the A90 you will encounter two roundabouts.
- At the 1st roundabout take the 2nd exit over the bridge.
- At the 2nd roundabout take the 3rd exit, signposted for the City Centre, and the Schoolhill campus .
- On Holburn Street, take the 3rd exit at the mini-roundabout, then the 1st exit at the next roundabout.
- Continue along Holburn Street until it joins with Union Street, where you should branch right.
- Continue down Union Street until you reach the Union Terrace junction, where you will see The Monkey House bar on the corner and a statue straight ahead.
- Turn left onto Union Terrace and continue to the traffic lights, where you should turn right onto Rosemount Viaduct.
- Continue forward until you reach the mini-roundabout. Go straight ahead at the
roundabout then take the 1st left to access the City Centre campus.

Buses:

There are regular coach and bus services to Aberdeen from most major towns and cities. Fares are very reasonable, with a return fare from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Aberdeen costing under £5 if you book in advance.

The bus terminal is located on Guild Street, directly next to the train station and only a short walk from our City Centre campus. The quickest way to get to the City Centre campus is to head up Guild Street, cross the road and enter the Trinity Shopping Centre. Walk through the Centre and exit at Union Street. Cross Union Street at the traffic lights by the cobbled Belmont Street. Walk straight up Belmont Street and you will come to the City Centre campus.

If you will be travelling on to our Garthdee campus you can get a free shuttle bus when you get to the City Centre campus.
