Brief history:

Thomas Holloway was a self-made multi-millionaire whose fortune had been made in patent medicines. He founded Royal Holloway College in 1879 after initiating a public debate inviting suggestions as to 'How best to spend a quarter of a million or more'. It was his wife Jane who suggested a college for women as the means by which Holloway's money might effect 'the greatest public good'.

Holloway's first great philanthropic enterprise, the Sanatorium at Virginia Water opened in 1885. The second, Royal Holloway College, largely inspired by the Chateau of Chambord in the Loire Valley, was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.

Built around two quadrangles, today it continues to impress as much by its size as by the exuberance of the roofline with its many towers and turrets. As solid as it is extravagant, it epitomises the wealth, optimism and spirit of philanthropy so characteristic of the Victorian age. It continues to provide a home for the Royal Holloway Collection - a Picture Gallery of Victorian art that was the final touch to Holloway's generous endowment.

operates between Kingswood and the main campus, which is free for residents.
- Gowar & Wedderburn 579 students Completed in 2004 these environmentally friendly residences have a community feel to them. Located at the lower end of campus near the sports facilities, the flats are surrounded by established trees.
- Founder’s Hall is at the centre of College life and is always a popular choice with students.
- New Halls will be completed by September 2007, these environmentally friendly residences will replace
Athlone, Cameron & Williamson Halls. They are located at the lower end of campus near the new catering Hub and sports facilities. Each flat will have eight en-suite bedrooms and a large communal kitchen/dining space.

Undergraduate fees

Bursaries
- Standard Bursaries; £500 awards for all full-time students from England and Wales who will be in receipt of a partial or full government maintenance grant for the year of study.

Scholarships
- Royal Holloway Excellence Scholarships; £500 will be awarded to all full-time students from England and Wales who will be in receipt of a partial or full government maintenance grant for the year of study and who achieve 320 UCAS tariff points in their A levels.

- Founder's Scholarships; £3500 awards for selected students who achieve 3 A's at A level and who will be in receipt of a partial or full government maintenance grant for the year of study

- Bedford Scholarships; £1000 award for students who achieve 3 A's at A-Level and is irrespective of household income.

- Choral and Organ Scholarships; Awards of £500 per annum (choral) and £1000 per annum (organ).

- Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme (STARS); £750 per annum award for students who compete in their sport at national or international level may apply to the STARS.

Physics Bursaries; £1000 award for outstanding students who achieve A's in both Maths and Physics A levels.

Rail:

There are frequent services from London Waterloo to Egham (40 minutes); Woking to Egham (35 minutes, change at Weybridge) and Reading to Egham (40 minutes). Services at weekends, especially those on Sunday, are less frequent than on weekdays. Train links to the rest of the country are available via the London stations or Reading. On foot from Egham
The College is about a mile from Egham Station, approximately 20 minutes walk. Turn right out of the station along Station Road and walk about 100 yards to the T-Junction and the traffic lights. Turn left at the junction and follow the road up to the large roundabout; go left up Egham Hill. The main College entrance is on the left immediately after the second footbridge.

Road:

The College is on the A30, 19 miles from central London and about a mile south-west of the town of Egham.

It is two miles from junction 13 of the M25 (London Orbital).

After leaving the motorway take the A30 west, signposted to Bagshot and Camberley (this is the Egham by-pass).

At the end of the Egham by-pass, continue on the A30 up Egham Hill (a petrol station is on your left); the College is on the left at the top of the hill.

The main College entrance is immediately on the left after the second footbridge.

Buses:

The following buses stop outside the College: London & Country buses 441 (Heathrow to Englefield Green), Bee Line 41 and 43 (Staines to Slough or Maidenhead), Westlink 417 (Hounslow to Windsor). There is also a College bus service, which runs between Egham railway station and the campus. The College bus, like the taxis, leaves from the main car park adjacent to the station. Taxis:

There is a taxi rank at Egham station in the main car park. Otherwise, turn right out of the station onto Station Road and there is a taxi office on the left, next to the Build Center. The fare is about £5. Some local taxi firms include Area Cars (01784 471001), Egham Cars (01784 434646), and Gemini Cars (01784 471111).
