Brief history:

The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Firth College was one of a group of university colleges founded in the later 19th century. It developed out of the Cambridge University Extension Movement, a scheme designed to bring university teaching to the large towns and cities of England, most of which lacked any university provision. The success of these courses in Sheffield led Mark Firth, a local steel manufacturer, to establish the College in 1879 as a centre for teaching Arts and Science subjects.

The Sheffield Technical School was the product of local concern about the need for better technical training of the men responsible for running the great industries of Sheffield, particularly steelmaking. A movement was started within Firth College to collect funds to create a technical department, which was established in 1884 as the Sheffield Technical School. In 1886 the School moved to new premises on the site of the old Grammar School at St George's Square.

On 31 May 1905 the University of Sheffield was granted its Royal Charter, and in July the new Firth Court Building on Western Bank was opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.

Contract Period
- 31 week contract covers accommodation, meals and bills during term time only. Vacate during holidays.
- 31+7 week. Christmas and Easter Vacation is on a room only basis i.e. without the provision of meals but you may leave your luggage there.
- 38 Weeks offers full service through both vacation periods and is only offered in Stephenson Hall on the Endcliffe Site.

Locations
- Two of the Halls (Halifax, and Stephenson) within the Endcliffe Village lie in close proximity to one another, about a mile from the main campus and two miles from the city centre. The two other Halls (Ranmoor and Tapton) are a short distance away. On average, they are only 1-2 miles from the main University campus, and there is a bus services for those who do not wish to walk.

- Bar One is the liveliest on campus, serves a wide range of alcohol and has a heated beer garden. It also has a function bar called The Raynor Lounge.
- The Interval is Sheffields answer to Central Perk. Fancy foods and open mic nights the range here.
- Fusion serves as a chill-out room and bar, with a second dance area. Becomes a bar & grill during the daytime.
- Foundry isn't easy on the eyes but does attract some top bands such as Bloc Party, The Coral and The Babyshambles. It also puts regular local talent on show too.
- Octagon is a quite stunning theatre come conference area.
- The Fox and Duck is the off campus SU pub, has another beer garden and serves decent grub

Fees and bursaries:

Undergraduate fees
- In 2007 UK/EU students will be charged £3070 in tuition fees.

Bursaries
- There are three types of University bursary, and you can qualify for more than one type. They are based respectively on:

- Household income burasary; - the current value is £665 for incomes under £16,375 and £410 for incomes between £16,375 and £33,770 irrespective of your entry qualifications or the subject you study.

- Your prior academic achievements and whether the subject you plan to study is a Graduate Priority Subject - from £255 to a maximum value of £1,585 depending on household income.

Visiting

Rail:

Sheffield is at the heart of the railway network. Regular services operate between Sheffield and London St. Pancras (2.5 hours), Birmingham (1.25 hours), Leeds (1 hour) Manchester (1 hour) and Nottingham (1 hour).

There is a direct link from the railway station to the Sheffield Station Supertram stop via the main overbridge; the 60 bus runs from outside the railway station.

Coach:

National Express operates a comprehensive coach service to most parts of the country from Sheffield Transport Interchange, Pond Street. The fastest service to London takes about 3.5 hours. The 60 bus runs from the Transport Interchange, and there are Supertram links via the railway station (platform 6b) and Commercial Street.

Road:

From M1, M18
- Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at Junction 33, following the City Centre signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57/A61 Parkway, which ends in a large roundabout - Park Square.
- From here, take the third exit, the A61(S), along Sheaf Street, following the Ring Road signs, and passing the railway station on the left.
- Stay in the centre lane approaching the Sheaf Square roundabout, and then take the first exit into Suffolk Road, again following signs for the Ring Road.
- Turn right onto the Ring Road and now follow signs for the University. Continue straight on as far as the third roundabout, the Brook Hill roundabout.
- Take the first exit for the main Western Bank precinct and the fourth exit for the Applied Science departments in Mappin Street (off Broad Lane).

From the West (A57)
- Follow the "City Centre" signs. The route continues to Western Bank, a main road that runs through our campus, and the University is signposted for the last mile.

Supertram Park and Ride
- Supertram Park and Ride is a very convenient way for visitors arriving by car to travel to the University without having to drive through the city centre and find somewhere to park.
- From the M1 use the Nunnery Square or Meadowhall Interchange Park and Ride sites.
- From Manchester and the west use the Middlewood or Meadowhall Interchange Park and Ride sites.

Transport within the city/town of:

Supertram
- Trams link the railway station and the city centre directly to the University. The tram stop is located at the back of the railway station. Trams from the station to the University run on the Blue route (destination "Malin Bridge").

- Trams from the city centre to the University run on both the Blue route and the Yellow route (destination "Middlewood").

- During the day, trams run every 10 minutes (15 minutes on Sundays) from 6.00am to midnight. Some departments are best accessed by alighting at the West Street stop, while for others it is best to use the University of Sheffield stop.

Buses:

Buses to the University are frequent and inexpensive. From the railway station and coach station you can take the number 60 directly to the University. Other buses from the city centre include the 51 and 52.
