Brief history:

In 1843, as the industrial revolution gathered pace and Sheffield was on the verge of becoming the steel, tool and cutlery making capital of the world, the Sheffield School of Design was founded. For over a century it enjoyed a distinguished history as one of Britain’s top schools of art and design.

In 1969, the Sheffield School of Design merged with the city’s College of Technology to form Sheffield Polytechnic—one of the first polytechnics in the United Kingdom.

In 1976, the Polytechnic absorbed the city’s two teacher training colleges, and was renamed Sheffield City Polytechnic. Finally in 1992, along with the other British polytechnics, Sheffield City Polytechnic became a university with the right to award its own degrees, and was named Sheffield Hallam University.

English Institute of Sport
- The new EIS multi-sport site at Sheffield provides sport specific training facilities for athletics, netball, badminton, judo, boxing and basketball, as well as providing sports medical services, strength and conditioning, athlete career education and other services for the region's top athletes. Located between Don Valley Stadium and IceSheffield on Coleridge Road in Attercliffe, the EIS is a £20m state of the art sports facility covering almost six acres.

Visiting

Rail:

Regular inter-city services operate between Sheffield and other main line towns and cities. London is two-and-a-half hours away by train, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham one hour and Edinburgh four hours.

Sheffield's Midland Station is just a two minute walk away from our City Campus and the nearby Transport Interchange links you directly to our other two campuses of Collegiate Crescent and Psalter Lane.

Road:

From junction 33 of the M1, follow signs for A630 Sheffield City Centre. Continue on the A630 until the dual carriageway ends at a large roundabout with traffic signals (Park Square). Take the fourth exit from the roundabout signposted Hallam University. Follow this road until, after bearing left, you reach the NCP car park on your left.

Approaching from other routes you will first pass the University on your right and then the Lyceum and Crucible theatres on your left. Take the first left after the theatres and then the first left again into the car park.

Unfortunately there are no car-parking facilities on any campus, other than for those with serious mobility problems.

Collegiate Crescent Campus
From junction 33 of the M1, follow signs for A630 Sheffield City Centre. Continue on the A630 until the dual carriageway ends at a roundabout with traffic signals (Park Square) ( 1 ).

Take the fourth exit from the roundabout signposted City Centre, then the third left turn into Arundel Gate ( 2 ). The Crucible Theatre is on your right and the City Campus on your left. Continue along the dual carriageway and go straight ahead (second exit) at the first roundabout ( 3 ).

At the second roundabout, take the third exit onto the ring road ( 4 ). Continue through the traffic lights to the next roundabout and take the first exit signposted A625 (Castleton) ( 5 ).

The Collegiate Crescent Campus is approximately 750 metres (1/2 mile) along on the right

How to get to Psalter Lane Campus
From juntion 33 of the M1, follow signs for A630 Sheffield City Centre. Continue on the A630 until the dual carriageway ends at a large roundabout with traffic signals (Park Square) ( 1 ). Take the fourth exit from the roundabout signposted City Centre, then the third left into Arundel Gate signposted A61 Chesterfield( 2 ).

The Crucible Theatre is on your right and the City Campus on your left. Continue along the dual carriageway and go straight ahead (second exit) at the first roundabout ( 3 ).

At the second roundabout take the third exit onto the ring road ( 4 ).

Continue through the traffic lights to the next roundabout and take the first exit - signposted A625 (Castleton) ( 5 ).

At the first set of traffic lights (adjacent to Ward's Brewery) turn left onto Summerfield Street ( 6 ). Continue up the hill to the next set of traffic lights and turn right onto Cemetery Road.

After approximately 500 metres (1/3 mile) you will come to a small roundabout ( 7 ). Continue straight ahead (third exit) onto Psalter Lane and the Psalter Lane Campus is approximately 1.2km (3/4 mile) along on the left.

Buses:

Take the 81, 82, 83, 84, or 87 from Leopold Street (outside Virgin Megastore) if visiting the Ecclesall Road end of the Campus.

If visiting the Clarkehouse Road end of the campus, take the 50 (Dore) from the Transport Interchange or Church Street or the 60 (Ranmoor or Crimicar Lane) from Church Street or directly outside the train station.

For Clarkehouse Road (Faculty of Development and Society) you need to get off at the Hallamshire Hospital.

For Psalter College take the number 3 or 4 from the Transport Interchange
