Bursaries
- University of Southampton Bursary; Depending on household income students are eligible for the awarsd. Students with a household income of less than £21 500 are entitled to a £1000 award. Students with a household income between £21 501 and £30 000 are entitled to a £500 award. PGCE students whose annual family income falls under £17,910 will receive a bursary of £305.
- Hampshire and Isle of Wight Bursary; 150 awards for students from minority groups attending further education colleges and school sixth forms in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Sports bursaries; Students who show outstanding sporting ability can benefit from the University of Southampton Sports Bursary Scheme, which allows individuals to develop their full academic and sporting potential.
Scholarships
Art - Fine Art Practice and Theory, Textiles, Fashion and Fibre
- Winchester School of Art offers a number of entrance scholarships to outstanding candidates who have either completed a Foundation course, or are applying for direct entry to 3-year BA Honours programmes, on the basis of high grades in art and related subjects in A Level or equivalent examinations.
Biological Sciences - Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, Zoology
- The School of Biological Sciences offers 15 entry scholarships of £2000 per annum to new students, based on pre-University qualifications. Successful applicants will continue to hold the scholarships for each successive year of the degree programme provided they achieve at least 60 per cent per year. A further twelve performance scholarships of £2000 each will be awarded to students with outstanding academic performance in their first and/or second year.
Chemistry
Chemistry
- The School of Chemistry's sp3 Scholarship and Award Scheme provides all students with the first year study texts. We also award at least ten scholarships of £1000 for the first two years of the degree for prior achievement in your preuniversity qualifications. Progress and high standards, along with proficiency on graduation, will be recognised with up to 20 awards of £1000 per annum given during the senior years of the course and upon graduation.
Civil Engineering and the Environment - Civil and Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences
- At the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment we are expanding our programme of scholarships linked to a number of companies, the SUCCESS scheme. SUCCESS provides continuing sponsorships to students selected in their first and second year of study. It includes a financial package of between £1000 and £1700, summer work placements and possible long-term employment opportunities on graduation. Students are selected during the first semester on the basis of an interview day including company representatives.
Education - Post-compulsory Education, Sport Management and Leadership, Sport Studies
- The School of Education offers a number of scholarships, each valued at up to £3000 per annum, to new entrants to undergraduate degree programmes in Sport (BSc Sport Science/BA Sport Management and Leadership). These will be awarded to candidates on the basis of both academic excellence and sporting achievement, either in performance or in relation to community sport development. The School will also offer a number of scholarships, each valued at up to £800 per annum for entrants to the part-time BA Post-compulsory Education programme, awarded on the basis of academic excellence.
Electronics and Computer Science - Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Technology in Organisations
- ECS will award £1000 scholarships to UK and EU students who receive three A’s at A-level or equivalent results for students with other qualifications. In years 2, 3 and 4 we will give the top 10% of students in each cohort £1000 provided they obtain a first class mark. All decisions on eligibility will be made by a representative of the School.
Engineering Sciences - Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Ship Science
- The School of Engineering Sciences offers 20 entry scholarships of £1000 each to reward excellence. We also offer 40 annual scholarships of £1000 for excellence in academic performance during the degree. The maximum possible award will therefore be £4000 over the duration of all programmes.
Geography
- The School of Geography offers a number of scholarships of £1000 each. These will include:
1. Entry awards, given to those in the first year, based on pre-university attainment.
2. Level 2 awards, given to those entering their second year, based on level 1 results.
3. Level 3 awards, given to those entering their third year, based on second-year results.
4. Progress awards, given to those entering their third year, rewarding progress throughout the first two years at Southampton.
Health Professions and Rehabilitation Sciences - Health and Social Care, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry

Humanities - Archaeology, Contemporary Europe, English, Film Studies, French Studies, German Studies, History, Language Studies, Music, Philosophy, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies
- The School of Humanities offers up to 10 one year entrance scholarships of £3000 each, based on high performance in entry qualifications. At least one will be available in each of Archaeology, English, Film, History, Modern Languages, Music and Philosophy. Progression scholarships will be awarded for high performance in first-year and second-year studies, to a similar number and value.
Institute of Sound and Vibration Research - Acoustical Engineering, Acoustic & Music
- The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research offers a number of scholarships of £2000 each to outstanding applicants to our programmes in Acoustical Engineering and Acoustics and Music. We also award a number of scholarships of up to £1000 for outstanding performance in examinations during the course.
Law
- The School of Law is employing considerable funds to enhance the learning experience of all the undergraduate law students and is offering a number of prizes/scholarships up to a value of £1000 to students demonstrating outstanding achievement at the end of each year while on the course.
Management - Accounting and Finance, Entrepreneurship, Management Sciences and Management
- The School of Management offers scholarships and prizes on its undergraduate programmes. A number of entry scholarships are offered to the highest achieving UK/EU applicants, while further prizes are awarded to recognise student excellence in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study.
Mathematics
- The School of Mathematics offers three types of scholarships, as follows:
1. Up to 15 scholarships of £1000 per annum for the duration of the degree programme (subject to progress) for the best qualified candidates, based on academic qualifications at entry.
2. Scholarships paying all tuition fees for the normal duration of the degree programme for any candidate entering with five A grades in distinct subjects at A level.
3. A scholarship of £1000 payable to each student upon entry into the final year of the MMath programme.
Medicine
- The School of Medicine offers a number of scholarships, rewarding students who achieve excellence in the assessments during undergraduate BM degree programmes. About £25,000 per annum will be available for scholarships. Individual students may be eligible for up to £1000 of scholarship funding by achieving distinctions in the BM primary and intermediate examinations.
Nursing and Midwifery
- Nursing and Midwifery students from the UK and EU do not pay tuition fees, as all these preregistration courses are funded by the NHS. UK and EU students on degree programmes are eligible to apply for a means-tested NHS Bursary. Those pursuing Diploma & Advanced Diploma Studies are eligible for a full NHS Bursary. Ocean and Earth Science - Geology, Geophysical Sciences, Oceanography
- The School of Ocean and Earth Science offers a number of scholarships of £1000 each. These scholarships will include:
1. Entry awards, given to those in the first year, based on pre-university achievement.
2. Level 2 awards, given to those entering their second year, based on level 1 results.
3. Level 3 awards, given to those entering their third year based on second-year results.
4. Level 4 awards, given to those entering their fourth year based on third-year results.
Physics and Astronomy
- The School of Physics and Astronomy awards a number of scholarships annually to outstanding students, based on a written examination taken in November of the year preceding entry. Scholarships are also available to students from outside the EU. These scholarships provide overseas students with £1000 per year for every grade A achieved in A level examinations up to a maximum of £3000 per year. Students holding qualifications other than A levels may be eligible as well. The Institute of Physics offers means-tested bursaries of around £1000 a year to undergraduates studying physics in the UK and Ireland.
Psychology
- The School of Psychology will be awarding 10 High Achievement Scholarships, worth £1000 each, to new students, as well as a number of scholarships for continuing students.
Social Sciences - Actuarial Studies, Anthropology, Applied Social Sciences, Criminology, Criminology and Psychological Studies, Economics, Politics, Population Sciences, Social Work, Sociology and Social Policy
