Brief history:

Founded in 1413, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. By the middle of the sixteenth century the University had three colleges - St Salvator's (1450), St Leonard's (1511), and St Mary's (1538): the buildings of St Mary's College and St Salvator's Chapel both date from this period.

The 16th to 18th centuries saw a period of mixed fortunes for the University. During this time St Salvator's and St Leonard's Colleges joined to form the United College which still survives in a greatly enlarged form.

In the 19th century the University made considerable progress in developing teaching and research in the Arts, Divinity and the Biological and Physical Sciences. In 1897 the University was joined by a new academic centre in Dundee and with it gained notable achievements in Medical and Applied Science. This association ended in 1967 with the foundation of a separate University of Dundee.

Going out and social life

Student union & social clubs:

Venues
- The Main Bar is the biggest boozer on campus. Open throughout the day it serves a massive range of hot food. Come the evening it is a perfect warm up bar for the SU events.
- Venue 1 & 2 make up the SU nightclub. Venue 1 is the main dancefloor where it gets hot and sweaty. Venue 2 is upstairs and mostly filled with people who can't get in Venue 1.

Volunteering:

Provision is very good. The Students' Association involves student volunteers across its organisation, including the highly successful Charities Campaign. There is also the SVS (St Andrews University Student Voluntary Service), which is an independant, student run organisation, that places students in local voluntary projects. There is also ties with Volunteering Fife, the local volunteering centre.

Schemes include LINK, whereby students mentor the locally young and the troubled.

One award worth £3,000 per annum for up to four years of an undergraduate degree in any subject starting in 2008.

- The Roses Scholarship; This scholarship is open to applicants residing in and having attended a state school in Yorkshire or Lancashire. Other parts of the north of England may be considered. One award worth £3,000 per annum for up to four years of an undergraduate degree in any subject starting in 2008.

- Music scholarships; Musical support available and music tuition fee contribution

- Royal and Ancient Golf Club Scholarship; Golfing support for talented golfers.

- St Mary's College Bursaries; A number of bursaries are available to students in the Faculty of Divinity.

Rail:

Nearest station is Leuchars (5 miles) on main line from London (King's Cross) - Edinburgh - Aberdeen. St Andrews may be reached by car, taxi or by service bus from Leuchars (2 to 3 buses per hour between 9am and 6pm and less frequently at other times). Travel by late overnight sleeper is convenient if met by car or taxi.

Road:

From south, cross Forth Road Bridge and proceed north along M90 to junction 2A. Follow the A92 until just before Cupar, then join the A91 to St Andrews. Alternatively, take M90 to junction 8, then A91 to St Andrews.

From south-west, either go east along M8 to Forth Road Bridge and then by route (a), or by Kincardine Bridge and A977 towards Kinross, joining M90 at junction 6 and exiting at junction 8, then by A91 to St Andrews.

From north-west leave Perth on M90 then by A913 to Cupar and St Andrews.

From north via Dundee, cross Tay Road Bridge on A92 and after 1 mile via A919 to Leuchars and A91 to St Andrews.
