Brief history:

The University was established from the Staffordshire Polytechnic in September 1992 which, itself, had been formed from the merger of its well-established colleges: the Staffordshire College of Technology in Stafford; the Stoke-on-Trent College of Art; and the North Staffordshire College of Technology based in Stoke. The original name at merger was North Staffordshire Polytechnic which became Staffordshire Polytechnic in September 1988.

The major work of the University has been concentrated on the Stoke and Stafford campuses until 1995 when the Shropshire and Staffordshire College of Nursing and Midwifery was integrated into the University, with bases at Stafford, Shrewsbury, Telford and Oswestry. In 1998, in partnership with Tamworth and Lichfield College, the University opened a newly built campus at Lichfield.

Scholarships and bursaries
- Ashley scholarships; 30 £500 to students from Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire who face financial, social or health-related difficulties in going to university.

Foundation scholarships; 2 £750 awards to former Access course students who have contributed positively to University life. Two additional scholarships are available to mature students who came to university via a different route. Students are nominated for these awards by their tutors, after completing one years study at the University

Rail:

Stafford railway station is in the town centre, about a mile and a half from the campus. Taxis stop outside the station for the short ride to the University.

Road:

Finding the Stoke Campus from the Motorway - M6 J15
- Leave the M6 at Junction 15 and go straight across at the roundabout (Signposted Stoke-on-Trent A500)
- Follow the dual carriageway (A500), proceeding past the A50 slip road, and note the sign indicating Stoke Station and Staffordshire University (sign reads ‘Staffs. University’). Just passed the slip road leading from the A50, move into the left hand lane, marked A52/A5006. Keep in this lane and when it becomes two lanes, move into the right hand lane, passing through the first set of traffic lights, and up to the traffic lights at the junction. Here, turn right following the sign for Staffordshire University.
- Continue under the railway bridge to the roundabout. Take the first exit, sign posted University Quarter and Staffordshire University.
- Follow this road to the first set of traffic lights, keeping in the left hand lane for College Road and the right hand lane for Leek Road.

Finding College Road Campus
- Keep in the left hand lane and turn left into Station Road, passing the railway station on the left and the North Stafford Hotel on the right.
- At the mini roundabout, turn right (second exit) into College Road.
- Turn right immediately after the pedestrian crossing onto the University Campus. Keep in the left hand lane (visitors), and report to the Security Lodge, before going through the barrier to park your car.

Finding Leek Road Campus
- Stay in the right hand lane to continue straight on through the traffic lights.
- After the pedestrian crossing, continue on until you reach the next set of traffic lights.
- Turn right onto the campus and then left just past the Security Lodge to park your car.

Finding the Stoke Campus from the Motorway - M6 J16/A500
- Travel along the A500 from the M6 - Junction 16 towards Stoke-on-Trent. As you near Stoke-on-Trent, pick up the signs for Stoke Station and Staffordshire University.
- Please note: the University Hospital is not part of Staffordshire University and is not located near the Staffordshire
University Stoke Campus.
- Move into the left hand lane, sign posted Ashbourne (A52), City Centre (Hanley) (A5006), Fenton, Stoke.
- At the traffic lights, stay in the middle lane and head straight across, following the sign for Stoke station and Staffordshire University (sign reads ‘Staffs. University’). Now stay in the left hand lane.
- At the traffic lights, turn left, following the sign for Stoke station and Staffordshire University (sign reads ‘Staffs. University’).
- Continue under the railway bridge to the roundabout. Take the first exit, sign posted University Quarter and Staffordshire University.
- Follow this road to the first set of traffic lights, keeping in the left hand lane for College Road and the right hand lane for Leek Road.

Finding the Stoke Campus from Derby/M1/A50
- Travel along the A50 towards Stoke-on-Trent.
- Once passed the Britannia Stadium (on your left) you will come to a large roundabout. Keep in the middle lane.
- At the roundabout turn right (second exit), go down the slip road, but keep in the left hand lane, following the signs for Ashbourne (A52) and City Centre (Hanley) A5006. Keep in this lane and when it becomes two lanes, move into the right hand lane, passing through the first set of traffic lights, and up to the next set of traffic lights at the junction. Here, turn right following the signs for Staffordshire University.
- Continue under the railway bridge to the roundabout. Take the first exit, sign posted University Quarter and Staffordshire University.
- Follow this road to the first set of traffic lights, keeping in the right hand lane for Leek Road and the left hand lane for College Road.

- Take the left hand lane and turn left at the traffic lights into Station Road, passing the railway station on the left and the North Stafford Hotel on the right.

- Turn right immediately after the first pedestrian crossing and keep in the left lane (visitors) for the car park.
Finding Leek Road Campus
- Take the right hand lane to continue straight on through the traffic lights.
- Travel over a pedestrian crossing until you reach the next set of traffic lights.
- Turn right onto the campus and then left just past the Security Lodge to park your car.

Directions to the Stafford campus

Travelling from the M6
- Leave the M6 motorway at Junction 14 (Stafford North).
- Follow signs for Staffordshire University / RAF Stafford.
- Carry straight on through the first roundabout onto the A513 Beaconside and pass the main entrance to RAF Stafford on your left.
- At the next roundabout, take the A518 turning and the entrance to Staffordshire University is immediately on your left.
- Follow the access road through the campus. Visitor parking is available in either of the large car parks. The main reception is opposite the Octagon building.

Travelling from the East
- As an alternative to using the motorway, take the A518 to Stafford.
- Pass the County Showground on your left and carry on until you see the large, yellow Octagon Building on your right (NB no right turn).
- Carry on to the roundabout and turn back on yourself. The entrance to Staffordshire University is immediately on your left.
- Follow the access road through the campus. Visitor parking is available in either of the large car parks. The main reception is opposite the Octagon building.

Buses:

There are also a frequent bus service from outside the station which goes directly to the Beaconside Campus. The number 9 Arriva bus runs approximately every 15 minutes
