Brief history:

The University of Surrey came about because of the Battersea Polytechnic Institute, which was founded in 1891. This institution was set up to allow those with a poor background greater access into higher eduacation. By the Sixties the main site had moved to Guilford and grown considerably.

In 1966, shortly after England's world cup triumph, the University received the Royal Charter and became The University of Surrey. Led Zeppelin, the legendary rock band were the first band to perform on campus.

Undergraduate fees
- All courses set at £3070

Bursaries
- Surrey Bursaries; Payments are on a sliding scale, with the full bursary of £1020 being awarded where income is below £17,911
- Enhanced-value Bursaries; Where a student is eligible for a Surrey Bursary and has also received a Surrey Scholarship, they will receive double the amount of bursary – so up to £2040 per year.
- Extended-programme Bursaries; £1500 for additional year of enhanced degrees such as MEng programmes.

Scholarships
- Entry scholarships; £1000 award for students who achieve 3 A's at A-level (or equivalent) on entry, excluding General Studies. Some programmes have a lower threshold as do care leavers and travellers, who must achieve 3 B's at A-level.
- Performance scholarships; Those not in receipt of an Entry scholarships will be eligible for a Performance Scholarship if they achieve a standard of first class honours at the end of their first or second year.
- Scholarships throughout your degree; If students who have been awarded an Entry or Performance Scholarship achieve a 2.1 or above in appropriate assessments, they will continue to receive a yearly scholarship throughout the remainder of their degree programme (except during periods of professional placement and extended periods of study).

Rail:

- Guildford is on the main London (Waterloo) to Portsmouth line, with a good service. London Waterloo is also the terminus for the Eurostar service to Paris and Brussels.Fast trains to Waterloo take 32 minutes. There is an alternative line, with a slower service, via Cobham. Trains run every half hour from Aldershot, Farnborough and Reading, and every hour from Dorking, Redhill and Tonbridge.

From the train station
- By Bus Guildford Link Bus (leave the station by the footbridge and rear exit, cross main road to the bus stop).

- By Taxi from main (eastern) exit

- By Foot leave the station by the footbridge and rear (western) exit, turn right into Guildford Park Road, after 200 yards (just past the Evangelical Church), turn right via Borough Car Park (about 15 minutes).

Coach:

By Coach National Express coach No 030 runs between Victoria Coach Station and Woodbridge Road, Guildford (opposite Ladymead Retail Park) every two hours from 9.00 to 19.00. Coaches run Monday to Sunday, journey time 60 minutes.Coach information (+44) 0870 5808080

Road:

- If approaching from London (A3) or the M25 (Junction 10), remain on A3 until you reach the exit signed to Cathedral and University. Do not take the exit signed to Guildford.If approaching from the A322 or A323 from Bagshot or Aldershot, at the A3 roundabout take the exit signed to Portsmouth, and then turn off the A3 at the first exit (signed to Cathedral and the University).

- If entering Guildford from Horsham (A281) or Godalming (A3100), leave the gyratory system at the exit marked Farnham (A31). After approximately 200 yards, at the mini-roundabout, take first turning into Guildford Park Road and continue along Madrid Road to The Chase for a mile. At the roundabout take the third exit, into the University entrance.

Buses:

- Getting to the University by BusThe University is served by 5 different bus routes (Service numbers: 3, 26, 27, 36 & 37), which are all operated by Arriva Buses. Service numbers 3, 27 & 37 embark from the Friary bus station in Guildford town centre throughout the day. These buses call at Guildford Railway Station before arriving at the University campus on Stag Hill. The 37 bus continues on to Manor Park. During peak periods, the 36 bus will also serve both the Stag Hill and Manor Park sites from the bus station and via the main railway station.

- Return journeys to the station or town centre can be made using service numbers 3, 26 & 36. During peak periods, the 37 will also travel from the Stag Hill and Manor Park sites to town via the main railway station.The campus map has details of bus stop locations at the University.
